Chapter 2

The boy was named Nazarates and appeared to be a normal
and healthy baby. After a few months his parents no longer
even thought about the al-Caliik who had visited them nor
what he may have done to their only child.

However as Nazarates aged it became apparent that he was
not a normal child. He was always lacking emotion and
never played like a healthy child would. He spent much
of his time staring blankly toward the wall. The local
healer told his parents that the boy had a deep red aura
about him. This was cause for concern as evil nature was
a true rarity in this community. Yet his parents loved
him, even as the rest of the village began to shun him.

Then on a fateful autumn day Nazarates took her son
to her sister's house where he was to play with his
cousins. After his mother and aunt had finished their
tea they came out to find Nazarates just staring blankly
at the side of the house while his cousin floated face
down in a trough used to water the livestock.

As the two women worked to revive the child Nazarates
sat motionless. When his mother ask him what happened
he said nothing. In a rage she slapped him but he only
looked through her. With tears in her eyes she said
"I don't know what you are. But you are not my son."
And with that, for the first time in Nazarates' life,
he smiled and his mother's rage turned to crippling
fear.
