#2099, "Starting weapon skill = 75%"
Edited on Sat 09-Feb-08 08:08 PM
|
I was wondering if you could make the weapon skill you start with, the one your practice weapon is, start at 75%.
I got my friend to try this MUD, when I talked with him about it the next day he said it was gay because it took him literally 3 minutes to kill the first fleshy creature he found so he quit.
Let's face it. When trying a new mud. I don't log in and start hitting help files, I start getting my first couple levels and learn as I go along. I wonder how many other people tried to kill their first creature and got bored and quit after 3 minutes of missing?
You could give new characters 1 less practice to compensate.
Either that, or start new players in a room that is also an academy guildhall... I'm sure a lot of characters can handle trying to find their guild in a brand new game before they can even kill anything, but I'm sure a significant ammount of people have quit. If a brand new mud is a TOTAL pain in the ass (i cant even get to level 2 and don't understand why) in the first 10 minutes, I'd quit.

Either that, or start new players in a room that is also an academy guildhall... I'm sure a lot of characters can handle trying to find their guild in a brand new game before they can even kill anything, but I'm sure a significant ammount of people have quit.
1) We don't force everyone through the full tutorial. I've considered doing this differently, but we did make changes so you have to head through your guild on the way through the Academy, and you get reminded multiple times about practicing if you try to proceed without doing so. Removing the door that goes directly to the Arena might be a solution there.
2) I'm boggled that you suddenly care about retaining newbies. I'm pretty sure that the sort of thing that drives off more new players than not getting free percentage points in one skill (two history entries from a certain someone):
"Temp-titled after repeatedly attacking the same naked guy (multiple kills followed by taunting after) who was trying to figure out (aloud) where the Galadon trainer was.
So, a couple days later, *name* finds the same (now out-of-range) newbie, ganked in Market Square by other people. His response: You tell (Newbie) 'I am now destroying all of your belongings.'
That guy's victim? Yeah. Last time he ever logged on. I'm guessing it wasn't because of his skill rating in a weapon.

This was some time ago, but the person never swore, or even acted aggressive. In fact, he made no effort to stop you from killing him (repeatedly), or from sacrificing his blue steel Galadon guard gear.
He definitely didn't drop link, as you killed him at 00:09, 00:28, 00:46, and 01:03 system time. Given that the ghost time is just over 15 minutes, hard to see how any link manipulation came into play.
He did ask (over yell and the newbie channel) where the trainer was. Not sure what was so provocative about that. After you killed him, he more or less sat around the same room and spoke with a nearby druid, who encouraged him to get off his butt and look for new stuff. He eventually unghosted, and you killed him in the same room, with him wearing nothing.
This isn't an isolated incident. You play a lot of lowbie-bashers who only go after the clueless, and spend a lot of time trash-talking them. (Heck, we've very recently gotten notes to immortal about some of the 'less impressive' roleplay these characters have shown.) Rationalize it however you want, but don't expect me to believe that you give a crap about newbie retention in general.

Specifically, the MUD kicked him for entering too many commands. He probably panicked and mashed flee a billion times, or something similar. That's why the 'protected' echo never kicked in-- we don't give it for self-spam. He reconnected right afterwards, and had already died, for about the billionth time. I'm not sure what you expect us to do when we see all of that.
By all means, if someone's link cause them to avoid being killed, feel free to pray about it and have staff look into it. This was just you being vindictive.
------------
In the broader sense, if you can't see about 5000 ways that the incidents between you and this guy could have played out differently, you have serious problems.
Good example, assuming he actually did go OOC towards you:
Pray Hi. (Name) is going OOC towards me. I think he's pretty new here, and might need a talk.
OK example: Kill them for the affront. Say something IC, then move on to doing anything else.
Your example: Spend 60 minutes on: Kill them, taunt them, and take their stuff four times in an hour until they stop logging in.

Every time I killed him, I offered him the chance to apolagize and I'd leave him alone. Every time, he refused and talked more smack. I am sorry, but I can't feel sorry for him at all.
If he didn't want to get killed, he would have either apolagized or maybe... like I did, learned from getting owned constantly and became a decent pk'er.
There is nothing wrong with someone ganking the hell out of anyone, no matter how new they are. And I don't see how you can chastise someone for that. That is how I learned to PK, by getting bashed. I didn't sit around, talk #### and cry. I didn't post about how cheap their tactics were or cry that it was unfair. I blamed the death on myself, and asked myself how not to die in the same manner. Sorry, but its carrion fields, this game's philosophy used to be bash first and don't ask questions, just loot. Yes I want new players to come to the game, but we're a PK mud. Not carebear fields. If you can't handle getting owned, then go play another mud. CF isn't for you.
I did make some comeback characters that I dropped for newer ones, and some lowbies that need to be deleted... probably immedietly. I couldn't rationalize throwing away somthing I spent time on leveling and skilling, but its now even apparent to me that they don't add anything. When you lose all interest in a char, it's difficult to put any effort into their rp. EDIT: So yeah, they pretty much suck. Lesson learned, and I apolagize for them.

That the total newb I hunted down relentlessly also happened to be the guy who went broken-english-insulting-ape#### on me and sexually harasses my female character. I enjoyed every moment of it because of that. Pro would have done it
When I got ROTD'd when Valg is talking about, wasn't my first session I'd encountered Xryss.
I guess I'll end my input here, and let anyone else take pot shots and let the thread die. I have no regrets about multi-killing a smack-talking, sexually harassing, ooc going, disco'ing clear buffer, child. Thank you for the hi-jack though, but I'd very much like new players to come to CF and stay.
If I have to gank the RARE ones that fit the above critera off the face of Thera, then so be it.

You can easily tell a newbie that he's beneath you, or that the dark gods admire strength, not weakness, and so you intend to let him grow stronger before testing him again... etc.
Or you can pad your pk ratio and multikill.
This is pretty much analogous to beating some kid up, then doing it again and again afterwards because he called you an asshole for doing it the first time.
If someone is standing in Galadon asking where the trainer is...
... do you really think your role forces you to kill him?
No. You make the choice to be an asshole in real life.

All that being said, I'm not sure in what world a newbie would have the fortitude to overcome being spam killed and spam full looted, but would be turned off by starting the game with 40% sword.

I don't really see this as necessary, but I could get behind an addition to the starting weapons where they'd tell your ass to go practice at your guildmaster occasionally if you were fighting with them and your skill was less than say 50%.

and tell how that affected his gaming experience. If he's willing to learn the game, then he'll give it another try.
The game could add an echo for newbies that are trying to use a weapon they don't know how to.
I think a better idea than a forced spoon is to educate the newbie to practice the skill.

That works, because it's my friend. The random joe who sees us on top mud sites, clicks us... he gives us 5-10 minutes to impress him.
If he goes to fight his first mob, and it takes 3 minutes (literally, roll a thief and go fight an agro fleshy), theres a good chance we lost that one. >quit, and click another mud on the site
I've never played a mud where you actually need to wander around the world you don't know to practice basic fighting to be able to handle the very first mobs to get to level 2. It's not that hard to see why my friend thought all fights were going to be similar to that, extreemly lame and time consuming.
I'm not saying give them 100% all level 1 skills, I'm saying let them have 35% more starting skill so they can handle a fleshy and maybe stick around long enough to learn about praccing. Attachment

Even a necromancer that doesnt practice sword past 40, isnt going to take 3RL minutes to kill a fleshy creature. The Guildmaster automates and makes you input a command to keep going 3 times before letting you leave. If your friend doesnt want to learn basic helpfiles, then he is going to have to learn the hard way.
Hey, it's his first time, he's NOT going to know a few things, that's the fun and challenge in learning. Do you have any idea how many times I died to little girls and that freaking small bunny outside the Inn when I was new? Did I quit the mud because in 5 minutes I couldn't figure out fight mechanics? Hell no.
Obviously he wants to learn by killing stuff, so tell him to roll an assassin, or warrior, and get a little more machismo earlier on.
You don't have to make up #### or exaggerate your post to get a point across. You want 75% in the skill, type Prac Sword once or twice, and you have it.
Geez, this thread just irks me.

Do you have a point, or are you just trying to get attention. Your post on Dio's about three legacies and not able to get more than three edges, more than speaks for you, on top of that our little insight into your history file.
Prac Sword, Prac sword... And try again.
If your "friend" has such a hard time figuring that out, CF is probably not the mud for him.
If you're just looking for a fight, look somewhere else buddy.

not to mention to even walk through the academy you HAVE to pass your guildmaster now, unlike before where you could accidentally turn into the wrong one. With that said, I don't know HOW he could have missed it.

that all new players go through tutorial phase.
I'm willing to say a significant number just start trying to level, planning on learning the game as they go. A 3 minute fight with your first mob = instant turn off.
If it did for my friend, and if it's easy to see that it could happen to others, it probably has happened quite a bit. You don't have long to make a first impression.

again... seeing as though you have to WALK PAST THE GUILDMASTER in order to even get to your first mob, I can't really sympathize. Maybe MUDs just aren't for him? There's always that possibility. Everybody who plays isn't going to like it.

I dont know perhaps I am not the norm, but I am super new to Carrion Fields, played one character to 19th level(Ulubaka the Orc) and now I have given him up and am onto a new more appealing character, but when I started out I read every damn help file twice just to make sure I understood everything. And with both characters I have never had a problem killing fleshy creatures, should be able to hit level 5 solo just by killing in them in less than 1 hour, or at least that is all it has taken me both times now.
It just seems common sense to read as much as you can, I mean its all right there for the taking.
Also, I found Carrion Fields on the top mud list and thats how I ended up here. Reading through the descriptions CF sounded by far the most well done! I am incredibly happy to have found this MUD and plan on sticking around for awhile to come, hopefully more people can be attracted with my outlook and I think CF would hit a new stride!
