Chapter 3

Hidden behind an outcropping, Varaez watched for days on end as denizens of the
underdark came and went. He had chosen this place, so close to the home of magi
because of the roaring waterfall nearby, which would mask the sounds of combat.
He peered to the south where he could make out the white walls of Voralian city.
A sneer crossed his face as he recounted his recent encounters with "squires"
and "Maran".

After a few days of foraging for food, and dealing with the cold due to no fire
his dilligence paid off. He heard his native tongue in the distance, from the
direction of the cavern which he waited by. A few moments later a small running
party emerged, he quickly counted their number to be three. He quicky noted that
their chainmail bore the mark of his house. He recognized their ring-leader by
his bald, tatooed head. It was Nazin, the captain of the houseguard. Varaez
instinctively moved his hands to his sides, finding the familiar handles of his
daggers, he knew he must be quick and without error.

He emerged from behind the boulder which he hid, his arm already in motion as he
came into view of the three. His intense training was justified as he hurled a
dagger at one of the house soldiers, his aim was true and the drow fell to the
ground vainly clutching his pierced throat. He was at a full run now and in
between strides he reached behind himself producing a pair of wicked hatchets
he was upon the other house soldier and captain before they could react. He
swung his hatchet and felt resistance as it connected with the house soldiers
head, a crunch and a gurgle signalled his demise. He quickly flipped his other
hatchet around, and brought the blunt side smack into Nazin's forehead, Nazin
only managed a faint grunt as his body went limp with unconsciousness.
