As a right-handed person who has fenced with several lefties, as well as being someone who has since sustained a permanent injury to my right wrist, such that I can no longer fence right-handed and have had to learn how to fence left-handed, I can testify that being a lefty when fighting is a significant advantage. Righties don't have to fight lefties very often, so when they DO, they have no idea how to get around a lefty's guard. But Lefties are fighting Righties ALL THE TIME, so as they learn to fight, they learn how to adjust to an opponent with an opposite guard position. Now that I can fence left-handed with equal skill as I used to fence right handed, I vastly prefer fencing as a lefty, even though I do nearly everything else in life right-handed.
