48466, Flaw Brainstorming
Posted by Daevryn on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Suggest a Flaw (one) that doesn't exist in the game currently but that you would like to see.

Winning candidates (if any) will be bad enough to be a serious drawback that you can't completely circumvent, but not so bad that the character is unplayable.

Which idea is going to be implemented?
48662, Mumble
Posted by Zephon on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Character has the chance to mumble something said via tell (unless to a cloaked imm) or gtell or jtell or cabal channels and will not notice that they have said it out loud.

Basicly means that if anyone is in the room they have a chance of overhearing most of your conversation. Even if it is one sided.

This ability is only for tell, jtell, cabal channels and gtell. Not prays. (atleast I think the syntax for the bond tell was jtell). Cannot remember.
48665, I HAVE VOICE IMMODULATION DISEASE
Posted by Tac on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
AND LACK INTERNAL MONOLOGUE.

I think it would be more interesting if you actually mumbled. So sort of like a selective mute-ism. You say something, but it is either unintelligible or simple not heard at all by the party. That way Thror can have a real reason to be all... "Oi! Wut's dat lad? Speak up yer lilly liver'd pointy ear!" and whatnot. :)
48689, I think both ideas are good, but I agree on the name change.
Posted by Zephon on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I was thinking mumble because they wouldnt say all the conversation out loud. So it really should be two separate ones though.

Mumble - Which you described as selective mute-ism.

Lack of internal monologue - Which is the tell, gtell, jtell, cabal channels all come out said by the character. With exceptions, speaking with cloaked imms, prays.
48659, Anathema
Posted by Straklaw on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Similar to Late Bloomer...for whatever background reasons, the character has already had run-ins with the Empire, and has become Anathema.

I would assume evil-only, though perhaps allow any ethos?

When you just can't tell this red potion from that green potion.
Sure needs a brainstorm on how to even approach coding that, though.

EDIT: And all felar should have that by default, unless their creators have found a workaround for it (makes sense they would want to). Any form of darkvision is supposedly also black-and-white only.
48582, Obese allergic drunkard
Posted by TrapperJohn on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Obese - more hungry more frequently, tire faster, more encumbered.

How many mages have we seen say they are fat in their description. Well, are you fat, or are you FAT?

--- I just edited these out after rereading Daevryn's instructions (one) but they are so awesome I'll let you save them for later ----

Allergic - You sneeze a lot when outdoors, and around felars. Seems harmless, but there are pulses of LAG when you sneeze!!

Drunkard - Suffer increasing morale loss and illness effects (withdrawal) when not tipsy or drunk. When very drunk, chance for movement to fail with a clever echo (You cannot go that way, you tripped in your drunken stupor and are now on the floor in a heap). Throw in some minotaur-speak effects for good fun.

1. At times you see bodies coming in and going out (Which they are not close at all? Or not even awake or exist?)
2. You hear random things from random persons either in the room or not.
3. At times you get attacked by a weakened nightmare (Weaker that what bards can call on you, so you don't die to them)
4. This has a prereq of 'Extreme Paranoia', so you should get it to be able to get the new flaw!

Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Character can only be trusting to members of his own race. Trustcabal etc., will still not cause trust where a member of another race is concerned.

Grouping with other races will give big minus to morale, especially if the other race is leading the group.

Character can not say more than 3 words to another race (meaning some quests are out, unless they break rp and pen a scroll).

>Character can not say more than 3 words to another race

If they can't speak more than 3 words because they're terrified, they shouldn't be able to group at all. I don't think this speaking limitation makes a lot of sense and it cuts down on RP.
48565, Not terrified (although I understand the etymology)
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Basically I used to work with a guy I considered scum. (He used to tell his staff to do stuff, then when it turned out to be stupid of him to do so, which they'd pointed out at the time, he'd lie and say he told them not to do it.) And that's just the start of it.

We'd work together because we had to at times, but I basically would talk to him as little as possible.

You can think of it as a manifestation of hostility.

Posted by Valkenar on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
>You can think of it as a manifestation of hostility.

Yeah, I mean I first understood it in the hatred sense (how xenophobia is normally used) but there's no shortage of hateful words coming from bigots of various kinds. I understand that on-the-job you interact with people minimally if you hate them, and that's sort of what a cabal is like, but a group is very different.
48570, I'm a big fan of the first two parts of this..
Posted by Java on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Though I could see it expanded to include grouping as well.

The word limitation seems counter productive though, since it either removes the option for RP, or forces players to mechanically subvert it (send 4 tells with 3 words each, for a 12 word sentence).

This seems a little tedious to code. I'd rather see this as a manifestation of roleplay, rather than something hard coded.

Blindness-

You cannot see.

Deafness-

You cannot hear.

Mute-

You cannot speak.

The Helen Keller -

Thror becomes your apprentice and you give him Sapper Training.

48522, I liked them but..
Posted by xrus on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Blind: Makes it totally unplayable if it's just it. You can't even 'gain convert' while blind. It needs some changes to the game. But with the current system, if they give you the Maelstrom, it'll be playable. (And I'd take it)

Deaf: As someone else mentioned in my post, will be somehow an edge. But I like it anyway. Make it an edge? :D

Mute: I've played mute chars before. Just put it in your role and pray. They'll mute you, and it's fun. Very fun. I didn't practice warcry to see if it's affected or not. But such skills should be affected, if the flaw is going to be added.
48523, A simple solution
Posted by Gaspar on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
When one of the main senses is removed(or flawed), the others are heightened or advanced. So yes, you could make them mutually exclusive. Blind loses sight, but gets something similar to bards hear light or maelstrom. Lose hearing, infravasion maybe. Mute, well, not much to gain other than a more profound sense of self, so perhaps colored emotes like heralds.

If the helen Keller option exists, then maybe others get to dress you or take you to rank. It would be highly annoying but very interesting.
48519, Sleeptalking and sleepwalking
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
The latter was suggested by Pro, but I think it's a good suggestion. Basically there's a chance you'll move around when sleeping.

Sleeptalking would only be possible to take as a stealth class, and would make you talk in your sleep and even yell. And if it does, you get a couple of rounds of lag (so you can't immediately wake and re-hide). It would be particularly interesting if what you said was picked from the list displayed by your afk command, so that you might give away secrets.

vomiting (emetic poison)
weight loss (minur carry max)
skin rashes (-chr)
arthritis
inflammation of the eye

lack of concentration (ooh, nasty for mages/communers, even at 100%)
48510, RE: Flaw Brainstorming

1. Nocturnal enuresis or Bedwetter flaw:
While you are under any kind of sleeps (sleep yourself or forced to sleep or unconscious or camped) you might (10% per hour) wet yourself.
You wake up just to find out that you've wet yourself again. Holy ...!
Lowers morale about 40? (Or whatever you say).
If we had a pee system, one could lower the chance by peeing before sleeping! :D

2. I liked to get a totally deaf flaw myself too. Mages/bards can't get it. Bards' songs have no effect on you.

48509, a handful of ideas
Posted by laxman on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Weak Hands - You have a tendency to have your weapon knocked from your hands when trying to parry.

wreckless basher - Your bashes do more damage but when you miss you suffer more lag/possibly minor damage from faceplanting.

Untuned - Only can take as a mage, You have no sleeks!

Magical Gag reflex - Anytime you drink a potion you have a chance to not swallow it and if you do you puke and take damage a la emetic poison/disrupt organ. Pledging to the village would not only remove this flaw but give you an additional penalty for taking it in the first place.

The glutton - You get hungry three times faster then normal.

alcoholic - Water does not quench your thirst, only booze.

Stationary target - You don't get the benefit of anti-gank code

Untrainable - You can't train

Daft Learner - You get no bonus skill %'s from ranking/imm exp

numb Skull - You get %'s when practicing as if you had a lower int.

Underperformer - You suffer a -2 penalty to the max of whatever stat is highest for your race (str for giant, wis for gnome, int for elf, etc)

Posted by Shapa on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Something like anti-social (you don't like anybody) or honor-type (you don't need anybody) flaw. It would be _really_ great if you change the system of how such characters gain the expierence so they gain the full expierence even when alone (since they will be always alone).

Also is there the chance to think about system for warriors wich would allow to somewhat trade the legacies for specializations and the specializations for legacies?

Old wound

Every time the character is hit in combat there is a small chance an old wound opens up and starts bleeding. How severe and long lasting the bleeding is I leave up to those good at balancing stuff.

This is based on the character Lancelot in the movie Excalibur from 1981. He at one point inflicts a wound on himself that for the rest of his life never heal properly.

Gigantism: Character is +1 size permanently. Gains +1 strength up to racial maximum, -1 dexterity, -1 charisma, 50% of normal lifespan due to the condition.

Dwarfism: Character is -1 size permanently. -1 strength, dex, and charisma, 75% of normal lifespan due to complications from the condition

48490, RE: Gigantism & Dwarfism
Posted by Quezzumpliet on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I considered that, both conditions cause join damage, hence the dexterity loss, but what about movement loss and perhaps chronic joint pain so they have to keep using poppy juice. Perhaps random slowness like effects when the joints become too inflamed.

Also, there are some issues with being that too large for giants, such as unable to enter places and gnomes who are now easy to bash.

Perhaps limit Giant sized races to dwarfism only, and gnome sized classes to giantism only. Everyone else inbetween can take either.

I think it could be balanced to where it is in fact an overall flaw rather than an edge.
48503, Now that I think about it. Perhaps some edges could have flaw requirements
Posted by Quezzumpliet on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
What if Gigantism and Dwarfism are edges, but, to earn them you have to take corresponding flaws plus a certain amount of edge points.

So take Repulsive at least twice, clumsy and sickly at least once and then you can earn Gigantism with enough edge points, a +1 size increase and maybe that +1 to strength.

Other new edges could be the same way, they give a great boost in something, but at a cost with flaws.

Insomnia

Pick and choose from the following:

- Has a difficult time falling asleep (attempts to sleep will occasionally fail and slightly lag the user). Penalties increase in a brightly-lit area. A blindfold can help with the latter.
- Are especially light sleepers, and will wake up if there is fighting/talking/noise in the same room or area.
- Have a difficult time remaining asleep, and will occasionally wake up.
- Sleep is less restful, granting a slightly reduced multiplier on regeneration rates while sleeping (but not resting).

Addle-pated
There is a small random chance that the character will be hit with a short duration confuse.

Effete
A person with the effete flaw finds that they cannot run around Thera constantly holding their weapons. The time they can hold their weapon is a function of weapon weight, but eventually even a dagger is too heavy to grasp, and the character must put it back into its sheath.

Muscle-bound
Characters with this flaw find they are functionally less dextrous when their strength is at their racial max.

Stutterer
Characters with this flaw will occasionally find it difficult to communicate, including the use of command words or spells. High stress situations exacerbate the stutter, but the discipline of being a spell caster can somewhat alleviate the severity of this disorder.

Spendthrift
Characters with this flaw have little notion of value. All shopkeepers will adjust their prices higher when negotiating prices with this character.

Miser
Characters with this flaw do not split gold equally; this itself may not offend their groupmates, but the morale of their groupmates will go down with each miserly split of the loot. Haggling with shopkeepers runs the risk of angering the shopkeeper, at which time they will refuse to do business with the character for the rest of the day.

Lech
Characters with this flaw find they move more slowly through areas that have a high population as they are constantly admiring the sexual attributes of those they see. The object of their desires may get irritated, resulting in verbal outbursts and mild acts of violence as the lecherous character walks by.

Butterfingers: Your character may have trouble picking up and possibly wielding/holding objects. I envision this to be like a very toned down version of grease invoker spell.

Hoarder: The character finds that he or she doesn't like giving up any of their items. This could include trade/barter if the simple hard to give away items isn't too much.

You are afflicted with ADD, and therefore lose concentration more often than most.

This flaw will make your chance to lose concentration on a failed spell/commune increase, up to and including at 100% in the spell/commune. This flaw also will not allow you to gain from studying your foes in combat as your mind moves on from what you've learned quickly. STSF for warriors, owaza/martial trance for assassins, timed attack for hunter rangers all function in a nerfed capacity.

However, having this flaw is also akin to having the Unpredictable edge.

I have no idea what's already in the game, but here are some ideas:

1. Fast metabolism. You become hungry twice as fast as the normal person and have to eat more often.

2. Hard of hearing. You sometimes fail to notice when someone enters or leaves the room you're in, even when they're not sneaking. You may occasionally completely miss attempts to communicate with you via "tell", "say", "gtell" and "cb". (That last part might be overkill.)

3. Bunions. It costs you twice as much movement as it would a normal person just to get around Thera.

4. Blood phobia. Whenever you're present in a room and see someone "bleed", including yourself, there's is a chance you'll faint from the sight of it.

5. {Material} Allergy. You can't wear or wield anything made out of {Material}; it causes you to break out in hives. (Material = gold, silver, etc.)

6. Pollen allergies. You are occasionally beset by the uncontrollable sneezing fits. When you do, it is obvious to anyone in the room. This flaw may only be taken by thieves, assassins, rangers and transmuters.

7. Easy mark. If you are grouped with other adventurers and your party encounters an aggressive creature, that creature will always target you first.

--- Morgellons (could call it the liches touch or some such)

According to the Morgellons Research Foundation, crawling, biting and stinging sensations and the emergence of strange blue, black or red fibers from the skin characterize a disease that nearly 14,000 people suffer from, according to the Foundation.

This is often accompanied by exhaustion, short-term memory loss, joint pain and changes in vision. The condition was named Morgellons in 2002 by a mother who believed her two-year-old son was suffering from the disease. The name comes from a 17th century skin condition found in France, in which children died after the emergence of 'dark hair.'

*** The top paragraph could be a cool little echo that randomly gets noticed by people in the room, when the echo fires there is a chance for one of the three affects to fire (or more).
Exhaustion (half movement?)
Forget (couple ticks)
Blindness and/or loss of scanning

--- Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), could call it something like the crystals caress, meh, I am bad with names.

In 1938, when American Harry Eastlack was five-years-old, he broke his leg. The fracture didn't set properly, his hip and knee stiffened up and, bizarrely, bone growths developed on the muscles of his thigh. By his mid 20s, the vertebrae of his back had begun to fuse together. When he died aged 39 in 1973, he was able to move only his lips.

He suffered from fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare disease affecting some 1 in 2 million people, in which the body's tendons and ligaments undergo a strange metamorphosis, essentially a transformation into bone.

*** I think this one could be really neat, have a small chance for any physical malediction that is based around broken bones to have a stacking -1 tick timer single point malediction to STR or DEX that doesn't go away until death.

--- Progeria – Accelerated Aging

We all dread the symptoms of aging – baldness, wrinkles, losing our teeth. But sometimes, they come all too early. Children with the extremely rare disorder known as Progeria begin to look elderly before they’re even two years old, while maintaining age-appropriate intelligence. Sadly, most people affected by Progeria begin to suffer from the same ailments as the elderly including arthritis and cardiovascular disease and rarely live past the age of thirteen.

*** You guys probably already have something like this, but a shortened life span quicker physical stat degeneration (based on age) flaw.

48499, What? Being left-handed is actually an advantage when it comes to fighting.

As a right-handed person who has fenced with several lefties, as well as being someone who has since sustained a permanent injury to my right wrist, such that I can no longer fence right-handed and have had to learn how to fence left-handed, I can testify that being a lefty when fighting is a significant advantage. Righties don't have to fight lefties very often, so when they DO, they have no idea how to get around a lefty's guard. But Lefties are fighting Righties ALL THE TIME, so as they learn to fight, they learn how to adjust to an opponent with an opposite guard position. Now that I can fence left-handed with equal skill as I used to fence right handed, I vastly prefer fencing as a lefty, even though I do nearly everything else in life right-handed.

Ironically, even though I work at a bar and occasionally have to remove people physical, I've never actually been one to get into fist-fights, or obviously melee weaponry. I was more running off boxing comments you hear (Rocky), and primarily going for the "F'n nothing's made for lefties to use! Stupid things!" humor.

Generally my rule of thumb for edges/flaws is that if it's more than about an hour's worth of coding, it's too complicated to be an edge. I've broken that self-imposed rule only a couple times for something I thought was really cool or interesting.

I might break it for this, even though it's really complicated to get right.

Narcolepsy

Short duration warning that the character is feeling extremely drowsy (and losing movement/mana) followed by a sudden sleep w/o save. If the character is in combat at the time, they are instead hit with short duration cataplexy and unable to move (lag). If they fall asleep as a result of a narcoleptic attack, they awake fully refreshed.

This already exists! Derp.

Not quite the way you envisioned it, but close.

WHY HAVE I NEVER SEEN SOMEONE TAKE THIS!? When I have a life again, I may have to play a narcoleptic character.

I like my version better.

Really this is the difference between your style and my style in a nutshell.

Me: Ten quick-and-dirtyish things added to the game in an afternoon.

You: One really cool but also really complicated thing that takes a week.
48473, you may have a point

I was starting to spec out a #1.1 (vocal and motor tics for Tourette Syndrome; we probably already have that, too!), but that may be over the top. It would be interesting to see an assassin who compulsively began flipping the bird to his prey while he was trying to hide in the shadows, though...
48475, That is a hilarious mental image.

You begin to stalk your prey.

You attempt to hide.

You continue to stalk your prey.

You step out of the shadows.
You yell '####. COCK. THROBBING COCK.'

You attempt to hide.

You begin to stalk your prey.

You sigh.

Pretty sure this is correct. I remember PKing him and I actually saw him randomly fall asleep when he was still a village app.
48517, I know because I was in the cabal with him :)

And he fell asleep a couple times that led to both my death and his :(
