#52019, "RE: I'd really like your opinion on me"
|
I intended to respond to all of these tonight, I'm at work and don't have the time I'd like to give thoughtful responses to everyone. But I'll answer yours now, as you have directly asked for it.
It's not really flame-y. The ic problems I had were different from the ooc problem I had. Allow me to explain. In a nutshell, I don't mind if the commander and drillmaster want to make a new policy, want to change things, want to do things differently than the village has done before. I might not like the change, but I recognize their authority to do so. What I do mind, and think is just plain wrong, is when they make the change and say that anyone who thinks or acts differently not only goes against their new policy, but is "not a real villager" or "undeserving to have a hut". Because we all know that if Thrym or Thror or Redik or any of the other names on the pillar woke up one day and were in the village, and acted as they had before, nobody is going to say they are not good villagers or don't have the right heart or courage. So, for example, when you guys decided to make the rule that you can't call anyone who isn't a villager or village applicant to defend the giant - when no rager is in pk of the enemy - that was new. I disagree with it, but fine, your call. But to take that extra step and say anyone who would even do that could not possibly be a good rager, could not have what it takes to be a rager, is just absurd. Forget the fact that I've done it with both of my ragers on the pillar, I've seen and heard other ragers, some on the pillar too, do exactly that. I've been asked by ragers when I am playing a non-rager (non-mage or enemy of course) to come defend if none of the ragers can fight the enemy. And so when you make these pronouncements, when you say it's not just that it's my way or the highway, but rather that your way is the only way a villager could possibly be, then I have a problem. This of course isn't just you, it's Yuvralin, but you were the one most vocal about it. That bothers me.
Also, I know - and now everyone knows from my pbf - that i was pretty much a solo killer, and that the few times I engaged in fights where odds were in my favor were either raids or the rare exception. But you made comments - in game and here, below, in your first reply to my death - that you heard otherwise. That's fine, people talk #### about ragers all the time, nothing new there. But you behaved as though you were ready and even wanting to give what they said more credence than what I said. That was disturbing. You're playing a hard ass, I know, I did some of that with Vershelt as drillmaster, but at least at first I think it's bad form to not trust the word of your own villager against outsiders. If it were other villagers, ok, then maybe you have a problem to figure out. But outsiders? Enemies? Not so much.
Lastly, you were by far the stingiest with bandages of any defender I'd ever encountered. Well, Uthenathian was very close second. You would be at near full mana and standing next to a rager who was near death, and you wouldn't bandage or poultice. People had to ask for them. Again, you're playing a hard ass, but that always bugs me, personally. And with you it was even more egregious because you were taking such a hard stance on not needlessly dying or sacrificing other villagers, namely the giant. So you were concerned with keeping him healthy, but not any other villager. That struck me as somewhat contradictory and problematic.
I realize that this is a long-ish post with lots of negative things. Please don't walk away from it thinking I thought you were a bad rager. You asked for what I didn't like, and so I said so. But there were a lot of good qualities, too. It's not easy to be the hard ass, the unpleasant, the strict character. But you stick to it religiously, and rarely did I see what I think is the player's personality peep out from behind the character's. As a result of me being generally a solo killer I don't get much chance to watch other villagers fight, but from what I saw you were very talented and had a good grasp on how to use the weapons and specs you chose. I also liked that you put rp before powergaming, and used your drillmaster dagger even against enemies who are resist_poison, like dwarves in the circle. It's little things like that which make a character stand out. Likewise I thought you were generally good about marshalling people to go take items, to participate in the cabal wars, rather than just wait for things to happen. I almost always try to do that with my characters, too. And finally I liked that while you stuck to your guns being evil (you're a duerg, don't forget that!) you were also a defender and were willing (with plenty of snorts and complaints, as you should) to help others regear or explore or do what they wanted. It's the bane of a defender's life that he will always be wanted by other ragers when they go equ gathering. It's like interviewing, it's a chore that comes with the job. You handled that well.
Anyway, the character pretty much hated you for the way you treated him. The player thought you were doing a pretty good job, just with the issues I described above. On balance definitely on the "good" side. For what it's worth....
