Chapter 3

The feeling of freedom lasted only a moment within Salyeris, but she had felt
it in that instance when the anti-paladin fell to her blade. It was not an
unknown feeling, she had felt it in brief moments before, though this was a
moment longer. The compulsion within her had faded, if only for a moment.
Quickly as it faded it returned, the need to serve the dead family, to seek
out any who could satisfy the insistence the runes placed upon her. But she
was certain. It had faded for a moment.

Salyeris looked down at the lifeless body. Just a man, one she had never met
before had struck out at her, and underestimating her had cost him his life.
And yet when he fell, the burden weakened. Other times had it weakened for
moments, but this was so clear to her that she finally began to understand
slightly how the runes compelled her. It had to be some form of magic, and
with the waning of magic's power in Thera so had the runes waned in power
slightly.

Magical studies and artifacts had always kept from her and her family by
their masters, and it had always been somewhat feared by them for they had
heard rumors of what it could do. And this fear had always been in the back
of her mind as she had travelled. So much so that she had still not even
allowed herself to use even the simplest of things magic was imbued into. And
the whole time it seems, she had been burdened by magic

Salyeris never had any gifts for magic and she understood very little about
it. However, she had seen the veil in her travels since emerging to the
surface, and had read some things in libraries about magic and its existence
in Thera. She understood basically that magic flowed through the veil somehow
and that any number of things could impact the veil and so the flow of mana
into Thera that magical things tapped into. It was all hard for her to
understand, and really she had not concerned herself with understanding it
further. However, in that moment when that dark mage died, she began to
understand how the veil could actually impact her.
