Description

There is a faint violet hue beneath each of this elven woman's sapphire eyes
as she gazes outward from behind a curtain of long silver hair sweeping
across her face. The rest of her silver hair is brushed back and held loosely
in place by a faint clasp of sapphire. Upon the back of her neck her hair
parts enough to reveal a triangular patch of pristine alabaster skin with a
tattoo of a storm cloud in the center of it. She stands slightly under five
and a half feet in height, with a slender frame visible under the clothing
she wears, though her attire is situatated in a manner to reveal little of
her true form. Around each of her wrists is a thin ornamental band of onyx,
and each of her fingernails have been painted a similar shade. You also
notice she keeps an exquisite runed harp close to her that her callused
fingers seem to fall to the strings of almost by instinct.

Chapter 17

The last battle.

The faint light of the setting sun cast an amber glow upon the aged elf that
rested against a tree likely a tenth her age. A growing pool of blood had
formed near the base of the tree from a deep wound in her shoulder, and
another one across her thigh. The blood loss had slowed nearly to a halt now
and the pain had settled into a dull throbbing, but she was not in condition
to fight, or to move. She knew they were near, maybe in fifteen minutes they
would be upon her, the allies of the now deceased mage that lay not more than
a few hundred yards away.

She ripped off a piece of torn cloth from her sleeve, dipped her finger in
her own blood, and began to scrawl out something on the cloth. She took out a
small utility knife, and drove it through the scrap of cloth and staked it
against the trunk. Rising to her feet against the protests of her aching
body, she closed her eyes, inhaled deeply to steady herself, and drew upon
her experience and training. She thought of the daughter she had never known,
the Battleragers she had lived for, and how far she had come in her long
life, all flooding into her.

She opened with the eyes of a much younger woman, ones filled with clarity
and focus. And she then set out to meet her foes.

In the final moments of light the writing could still be seen.

I fear not the setting sun,
I fear not the abyss that is to come.
None may strip me of what I am,
For I am ever the master of my soul.

And as darkness blanketed the forest sounds of battle erupted nearby.

Chapter 16

Strange dreams.

Silence had filled the village air as Salyeris slept against a tree in the
vale. Then a sharp breath came from her as she woke, startled by something.
From the depths of sleep she had seen something, something she could not
understand. She called out to no avail. No answer was needed though. She knew
what she saw. Lesolanya, her daughter, weaving spells as fluidly as Salyeris
wove her songs.

She rose slowly to her feet, lingering visions of her dream flashing across
her mind as if they were real. Others had told her, told her of visions that
came to them of a young wood elf girl dancing and weaving magic. And yet, a
doubt remeained within her. A doubt she no longer held. Salyeris knew it was
her daughter they had seen. A moment was all she needed to know the truth of
it.

Salyeris glanced around, satisfied that she was alone. "Just a dream" she
whispered to herself. Still, a nagging thought came to her, and she could not
deny it much as she tried to put it from her thoughts. "What if..." She shook
her head at the thought.

"No, it had only been a dream." Salyeris knew the powers of illusions well,
knew just how real they could seem. Knew how to weave them into the minds of
others. Yet, no matter how many times she repeated it, she could not remove
that lingering image of her daughter. Her daughter, weaving magic. Her
daughter, becoming that which Salyeris had fought against all her life.

She stretched for a moment, before looking to the eastern sky. Lesolanya had
been hidden, her identity a secret few knew the truth of, fewer still could
be certain of.

Salyeris packed a few things and left the village, not speaking a word to any
as she left. The time had come. Salyeris was going to be reunited with her
daughter once more.

Chapter 8

Commander of Battle

The tests were grueling and hard fought, and ultimately Salyeris found
herself failing to emerge the victor in any of three combat rounds, fighting
well, but not as well as she had hoped. The combat was over now. As all the
battleragers returned to stand before Thror, he made it clear that he had
narrowed the field to just three. One by one battleagers made their way
outside the gates. Thror turned locked the gate once more and turned to face
those who remained. Salyeris, Iepnier and Xazzax stood before the Lord of
Battle, knowing one of them was to be named Commander.

Salyeris looked over to the others, then to Thror. Thror looked at each of
them before he spoke."Ye did an excellent job O' tha' Rites." Thror said,
"but tha' consistency ye show e'en 'efore tha' Rites plays a role in our
decision te bring ye 'ere." It was quite a compliment coming from the Lord,
and right before the test of wits began, Salyeris added her own
congratulations to the other two. Of the two applicants she had recommended,
both had made it to the final round of the Rites. It affirmed in her that she
had chosen wisely in them, and she was sure either would make a fine
commander.

Time passed as Thror spoke with Iepnier, then Xazzax, before calling her as
the last to speak with. They conversed a while, Thror taking in her
responses, no doubt gauging them against the others. In the end he dismissed
her back to stand with the others.

And then without warning the decision was made, and Salyeris found the
honored weapon of Commanders before her materializing in her hand. She had
been named Commander. It was a surprise to her, but she vowed not to fail the
village, and to uphold the position to which she was named. And her first
task was to name one of the other two Drillmaster, and ultimately she decided
on Iepnier, leaving Xazzax to undergo something far more grueling under
Thror's direction.

A new dawn in her life had begun, as the Commander of Battle. Things had
grown slack in the absence of a leader, but she would immediately see to it
that such would soon change.

Chapter 1

Fall of the Daehyanda.

Salyeris Nimkerta was once a servant to the dark elven Daehyanda family, was
once bound to them from birth as the last five generations of her family had
been. Perhaps servant was too kind a word, but slave did not fit entirely
either, for they were not treated cruelly or harshly in recent times. There
was no need for it as there had once been, before her family name had become
Nimkerta. The brand upon the back of her neck compelled her to serve them, as
it did all who shared her blood line. As it would any child born to any of
the females of her family. And it was only because she was female that she
was not slain at birth by her masters.

But that was then, a past she only recalled parts of as decades had passed.
The last memory she had of them all, her sisters, her mother, her masters,
was of the celebration.

It had been a grand celebration, one the whole Daehyanda family had attended.
None suspected something amiss, though their favored wine tasted slightly
different. So they had sent Salyeris to get more, and so she opened the door,
dropping the wards which prevented entry for but a moment. And yet before the
door closed and the ward snapped back into place, three figures slipped in.

Salyeris returned to find not a soul alive within the home, every throat,
dark elven or wood elven, slit. None showing any sign of having fought the
unknown assailants. The wine had been drugged, and the their fates sealed.

And with that, Salyeris was left on her own.

Chapter 2

A new life.

Fortune is a funny thing, and rarely on it's face can it be clearly
understood. Salyeris was free of her masters, but she was not free of her
compulsion. The brands compelled her to serve the Daehyanda still, and yet
none lived for her to serve. The weight of the brand weighed on her
endlessly, always there in the back of her mind, urging her to find them, to
serve them as she once had. For she was forever their slave.

Within the central circle of the brand, a dark elven rune for di'thang was
scarred into her flesh. The lower left the rune for Dae, the lower right the
rune for Hyanda. Slave of the Shadowblade family. Even with their death, she
was not free of that mark, not free of their burden upon her to serve them.
Forever more, she would be Nimkerta, the bearer of the white runes of
servitude. Only in her own death, would she be free of the curse.

And so she was free only in that her will was once her own, but she would
never truly be free of the burden those runes placed upon her. Youth she had,
and so time, but as she found her way to the surface of Thera there was
hesitance in her step. She did not know what her life would bring, where it
might lead. And there was the ever present fear that perhaps one day one of
Daehyanda blood would emerge, perhaps a bastard child never made part of the
family, to return her to servitude once more, for the brand upon her would
demand nothing less of her, and in the presence of one to serve, it would
break her will once more into submission before them.

A shudder came over her with that thought. There was little time she could
afford to waste. And with that she found her resolve, and stepped without
hesitation into her new life.

Chapter 3

The veil and the runes.

The feeling of freedom lasted only a moment within Salyeris, but she had felt
it in that instance when the anti-paladin fell to her blade. It was not an
unknown feeling, she had felt it in brief moments before, though this was a
moment longer. The compulsion within her had faded, if only for a moment.
Quickly as it faded it returned, the need to serve the dead family, to seek
out any who could satisfy the insistence the runes placed upon her. But she
was certain. It had faded for a moment.

Salyeris looked down at the lifeless body. Just a man, one she had never met
before had struck out at her, and underestimating her had cost him his life.
And yet when he fell, the burden weakened. Other times had it weakened for
moments, but this was so clear to her that she finally began to understand
slightly how the runes compelled her. It had to be some form of magic, and
with the waning of magic's power in Thera so had the runes waned in power
slightly.

Magical studies and artifacts had always kept from her and her family by
their masters, and it had always been somewhat feared by them for they had
heard rumors of what it could do. And this fear had always been in the back
of her mind as she had travelled. So much so that she had still not even
allowed herself to use even the simplest of things magic was imbued into. And
the whole time it seems, she had been burdened by magic

Salyeris never had any gifts for magic and she understood very little about
it. However, she had seen the veil in her travels since emerging to the
surface, and had read some things in libraries about magic and its existence
in Thera. She understood basically that magic flowed through the veil somehow
and that any number of things could impact the veil and so the flow of mana
into Thera that magical things tapped into. It was all hard for her to
understand, and really she had not concerned herself with understanding it
further. However, in that moment when that dark mage died, she began to
understand how the veil could actually impact her.

Chapter 4

A place among the Battleragers.

"Do I need to remind you Zahlju?" At Salyeris's remark the arial grinned
slightly knowing that behind her humor there was a degree of truth in her
remark. The other arial, Iepnier, an assassin scout, looked at Zahlju and
asked what Salyeris was talking about. The arial replied "Salyeris does not
like it when I make remarks about her" a slight pause hung in the air,
"snow." At that Iepnier laughed slightly, for the euphimism was not lost on
any of them. After all, Salyeris had claimed to be pure as the fallen snow
while they had sat idly in camp a few days ago.

Such was the company Salyeris found herself in now, having found her place
among the Battleragers. Perhaps an odd choice for she was not consumed by
anger or rage as some of her fellow battleragers were. By most accounts, she
was actually calm and peaceful, but she had come to understand the dangers of
magic, and more importantly how it impacted her own life and what it might
mean for her future. If she could weaken magic in Thera enough break her
curse, or prevent it from passing to her child, she had to try. And so she
had joined in with their cause, and found herself thrust among their ranks.

She looked at the two arials with her now, and let a slight laugh join in
with theirs. She had faith in her decision to join them, and oddly she had it
in those she found among them. People brought together by common goals where
otherwise they may well have killed one another. Dedicated to the last. And
now she was a part of that honored tradition.

They broke camp once more, to resume their training against the mages within
the tower, the rest having renewed their vigor and thirst for battle. The
mages fell swiftly an quickly, and all the while, the three Battleragers wore
smiles upon their faces as the battles waged around them.

Chapter 5

A glimpse of hope.

A few strokes of his hammer reduced the magical blade to ash and cinders, and
with its destruction Salyeris could feel the burden upon her weaken slightly
as the veil thickened. "Fine work Tahren, as always." The blacksmith just
gave a grunt and a nod to her before resuming his normal duties about the
forge and with that Salyeris began to set out but paused amount in the middle
of the room as she revelled in the weakened compulsion placed upon her by the
runes.

She had learned much as a Battlerager, about how the blood of mages impacted
the veil and about what things could be used to thicken the veil by being
destroyed in Tahren's forge. It had reinvigorated her to know that she may
truly be rid of the curse through enough effort. Just maybe, she would know
peace from it before she died. With that a brief moment of true happiness
came to her. She hummed a faint tune and twirled around in a spin, dancing to
the melody.

Lost in the moment, she did not notice Tahren had moved to gather something
near her. As Salyeris twirled she flung out her leg and was quite surprised
when she felt her foot bury itself into Tahren's stomach, Tahren letting out
a very surprised grunt as he got knocked to the floor. "Damn it, elf, what
the hell are you doing?!" Salyeris winced as she looked at the blacksmith, an
elven boot print clearly visible on his soot covered apron.

"Sorry master Tahren, something come over me and I just felt the need to
express it." Tahren stumbled to his feet an looked at her. "This is why we
shouldn't have you damned elven women in our village. Never seen a dwarf or
giant come in here and start dancing for no damn reason." He looked at her as
he made his way back to his anvil, "Now get the hell out of my forge before I
make my hammer come over your damn head and make your head really spin!"
Salyeris started to laugh, but noticed Tahren reaching for his forge hammer
and hastily exited the forge, not wishing to press her luck with the aged
smith. Still the smile remained with her though, in part for having felled
the smith in such fashion, but more so for the glimpse of hope she now saw.

Chapter 6

Meeting Neltouda

The salty air of the Dragon Sea blew gently across her cheeks as Salyeris sat
looking over the rail of the Thundering Maiden. Her eyes closed, she took
deep breathes, taking the air into her lungs, holding it there as if she
could capture the Sea within her. She opened her eyes once more as she
exhaled. And there she was, Salyeris could feel her presence. The Captain had
met her during an eveing at the Eternal Star, but this was something
different, this was just the two of them.






Neltouda looked her over as she greeted Salyeris. She had extended the
invitation to her ship to the wood-elf and Salyeris had been more than
willing to come. And from there the discourse just flowed seemlessly from one
topic to the next, as if it were a well orchestrated dance where timing and
rythm just flowed together naturally, Salyeris better understanding the
Goddess, but more importantly herself, from it. Through it all, Salyeris
watched the Goddess, taking in every word, awed by the presence but strangely
at ease.






When Salyeris left, she knew she would return in the future to talk, to
learn, maybe even to sing with the Goddess. There was a draw to Neltouda
within Salyeris, to the way she saw things, a way Salyeris could not have
been able to see without her guidance. A way she wished to know more of, a
way she hoped Neltouda would continue to teach her. She took another deep
breath, the salty air lingering within her, and left the ship.






As she left the ship the burden of the runes flared within her as if to
remind her of her place, and Salyeris once more cursed the Daehyanda family
name. She was a Battlerager, her will had only grown stronger since her youth
and the curse was often relegated to the recesses of her mind as if they did
not exist. But, within she knew it remained. For now.

Chapter 7

The Rites.

The war drums sounded from the north, echoing across all Thera. The time has
come, the Rites had been called. Various Battleragers rose to their feet as
Thror appeared within the Village. One by one they entered the arena, each
with a somber look on their face. This was no small matter, for in the time
to come one of them would be named Commander of battle, another Drillmaster.


Salyeris could look to each of the entering battleragers, all people she had
come to know rather well. She could gauge who would likely shine, who was
there only to put the others to the true test of their worth. It would not be
an easy trial for any of them, but that was the point. Some thought
themselves fit to lead the village, but this would be a true measure of their
worth against their peers, and more importantly in front of Thror, who'se
stern gaze looked over all of them one by one as he spoke of the rules that
were to govern the Rites.

Soon the rounds of combat begun, many going to watch the fights, except
Salyeris. She sat, unmoving, in the circle as others fought to prove
themselves. Winners and losers were named, combatants taken fom the field one
by one.

Salyeris sat back through it all, a calm expression on her face as she
awaited her name to be called by Lord Thror. All the while in the back of her
mind was her encounter with Lady Neltouda not long before. There had been a
hint of something more to come, should she prove herself in the Rites. As
Thror finally called her name, she focused her mind again. Mauz, one of her
closest friends, was to be her opponent. One of the few she knew would pose a
true challenge. As he looked to her he said he'd have it no other way. She
smiled at that, for neither would she.

Chapter 9

Breaking the curse.

A familiar feeling came to Salyeris as she sat in the village, one she had
come to know rather well. Shortly thereafter she was once more aboard the
deck of the Maiden, standing before Lady Neltouda. There had been talk prior
to the Rites, and Salyeris had proven herself in them, something the goddess
had taken note of. As they spoke the goddess brought forth a mahogany harp,
all the while looking at Salyeris.

There was an instant, though to her it felt far longer, of intense pain as
the goddess grabbed hold of her neck. The smell of ozone was heavy in the
air, the pain nearly caused Salyeris to pass out, but she held her focus and
managed to stay awake until she was released from the grasp, at which point
she collapsed to the floor. The Goddess paid her no mind though, as she then
grabbed the harp, and another flare of energy came forth around the
instrument and the goddess.

The light settled and faded as Salyeris regained the strength to stand. In
thehands of the goddess was the harp, but upon it now were a series of
intricate runes, one Salyeris knew all too well. They were hers, the brands
from her neck. She tenatively touched her neck, and found the once scarred
flesh now smooth. A small grin came to the lips of the goddess as she saw
Salyeris begin to understand what had just happened. The curse, the one that
had plagued her family, had been lifted, taken from her, the dark power and
pain it had caused her contained now within the harp before her.

Neltouda nodded to Salyeris, and presented the harp to her. It was an
exquisite instrument, an instrument only she could play, one bound to her and
her alone. All the pain of her runes echoed within each note Salyeris played
upon it, but now she was in control of it.

Salyeris, now the Commander of Battle, was finally free.

Chapter 10

The next Drillmaster

The village was quiet, as it often was in the late hours of the day, and the
few Battleragers around were in their usual spirits. Some of the dwarves were
drinking ale and telling stories, boasting about great deeds and bearded
women, while others sat in meditative trances, focusing their minds. Among
them all walked Salyeris, their Commander, an odd figure among these hardened
warriors, for she was small in stature, and a minstrel as well. And yet, she
commanded their respect for the title she held, and perhaps more so for
having bled with each of them on the fields of battle.

She approached them all, speaking with them of inconsequential matters, for
things were calm. But in the undertones she could sense it, there was perhaps
a growing unease among some of them, or perhaps it was simply anticipation,
at who would take Iepnier's mantle of Drillmaster now that he has fallen.
Salyeris knew some wished the position, indeed two had openly announced their
desire for it, but Salyeris has not named a successor. Nor would she, unless
directed to do so. It was not her place to choose before, and Commander
though she was, she naturally deferred to the Lords of the Battleragers on
such weighty decisions.

However, she knew who she would name, who she favored for the position.
Caitlyan, a blooded warrior, had taken every opportunity to prove herself a
true Battlerager, indeed she had even earned the personal recommendation of
Salyeris by claiming five different classes of mage skulls as an applicant.
Salyeris could only smirk, thinking that it was only fitting another she had
recommended to the village replace one of the others she had before in her
life.

Still, she had faith in the lords above, that when the village needed a new
Drillmaster, one would be named, be it her choice or their's, she would honor
and respect it as she did all her fellow Battleragers and their hallowed
Lords.

Chapter 11

A family among the village.

As she sat overlooking the railing of the Maiden, Salyeris took a moment for
herself. Often did she visit the ship of Lady Neltouda, to find a place of
calm amongst the tempest that was life leading the Battleragers. It had ever
been an oddity to her that unlike most Battleragers, she harbored no rage or
hatred within her. And yet still she fought with every ounce of herself for
the cause of the Battleragers, to see the war through to it's end, or her
own.

She was slow to anger, and quick to calm, perhaps a virtue of her advancing
age. She had always attempted to be stern, but with a soft touch, so that the
Battleragers always knew why she acted as she did towards them. It was an odd
sensation to her, to have so many she felt the need to watch over. At times
she saw them more as the children she had never born, and looked over them as
a mother would. She taught what she could, aided them through their
struggles, and protected them with her own life, with no greater pride coming
then from their successes far more than any of her own.

That realization was nothing new, for she had always desired a family, but
her dedication to the Battleragers has likely closed that path to her, for
the toils of war would seldom permit the idle life she had once envisioned, a
life blessed with children of her own. And yet, at the same time, it had
given her what she sought, a family of her own. She would fight to the end to
protect that family, and all those within it, and she would suffer none who
would bring it harm, be they enemies from the outside, or those who would
weaken the Battleragers from within.

Chapter 12

The golden years.

Once deep onyx, but now entirly silver hair blew gently in the breeze as
Salyeris looked out over the deck of the Thundering Maiden. An idle hand of
hers gently massaged the back of her own neck, the spot where she had once
been marked, where she had been marked once more. There was a slight tingle
along the tips of her fingers as the mark of the Goddess Neltouda responded
to her touch. It had been long since she had seen the goddess, but on their
last meeting the mark had been granted. The mark, and another promise, one
Salyeris could see fulfilled or not depending on what she did next.

Salyeris had made no secret of her desire for a true family and child, and
had even spoken with Lady Rayihn about such a thing. It seems the Goddess had
taken an interest in the subject, for reasons Salyeris did not know, but
suspected no alterior motive in. And so she had begun to open herself to the
possibility of finding a mate, and more importantly, finding one to help her
have a child. And it was the oddest of sources that one had approached her on
that topic.

At that moment a slight gust of wind caused a faint musical sound to emanate
from the strings of her harp, as if it was reminding her she had things to do
beyond sitting idly among the clouds. With a smile her hand went to the
strings, alighting atop them once more, their familiarity to her touch
another warm reminder of just how far she had come. Her harp, the one thing
she hoped to leave to her child, an heirloom of the family she hoped to
begin.

Chapter 13

Embracing the storm.

Years passed by quickly for an elf, one to the next, and Salyeris was no
different. More so then ever before she had felt the weight of her years
though. As her Goddess vanished into the clouds once more, a nagging thought
came to her. She had been asked about high points and lows, and she knew that
for all the high points, she could not escape the low that she had admitted
to to her.

As a follower of Neltouda she could not sit idly by and wait for life to come
to her. No, she had to go out and seize what she wished for herself. Embrace
life, embrace desires, and find the will within to pursue and attain them.
She had attained most all her dreams, but the last one still eluded her. Here
she was, a Battlerager, the Commander of the village, and she had acted as if
she was little more than an adolescent girl too afraid to take what she
wished. She clenched her fist at the thought of it.

For all her efforts, Salyeris was still without her own true family. She had
spent time pursuing romance with Iklahn, but it was ever more clear to her
that such efforts were never going to go where she wished, nice enough fellow
though he was for an Islander. She respected him, even cared for him, but
they were enemies, and would be forever, no matter personal feelings. Neither
would forsake their oaths for the other, and so it must be that their time
would now be spent on the battlefields, where whatever emotions they held for
one another would flow out in the beautiful dance of battle.

Clarity and purpose filled her as she began to think. She knew her mind, her
desires, and knew she onle needed find a suitable elf to fulfill them. The
solution was quick to come to her. With determination guiding her steps, she
set off to Evermoon.

Chapter 14

Chasing dreams.

As she walked into the halls of Evermoon Salyeris paused for a moment
breathed in deeply. This was it, this was to be the culmination of all of her
efforts she hoped. The wood elves paid her little mind as she walked through
the twisting halls, eventually finding what she had come for. The door in
front of her bore the insignia of the ruling family, and within sat a
slightly inebriated wood elf. Prince Jaern Evermoon was his name, the one she
had chosen and at the moment he seemed to be enjoying a healthy amount of
elven wine. This would be all too easy.

He had hardly noticed her, so used to having servants come and go, when
Salyeris deftly began a song over her favored harp. She lulled the prince
into slumber and then wove illusions all around him with her voice. The stage
was set perfectly. She moved to the door, locking herself in with the prince,
before she moved beside him and roused him from his half slumber. While he
was still half asleep and caught in a dream, she planted the ideas within
him, of what he could be, of who she was to her, and prince Jaern willingly
embraced every suggestion she made, perhaps none more so then he might take
his father's throne, if only he could produce a suitable heir a notion that
was in truth silly to Salyeris, but it would serve her purposes

There was no hesitation from her as she disrobed and took Jaern into her
arms. When a moment of doubt came to her she quickly put it out of her mind.
It would get easier she told herself, each time she would remind herself of
how far she had come and how close know she was to her dreams. And it was
that which made it bearable for her, the notion of what may come. The prince,
for his part, served aptly under the illusions she weaved about him,
embracing the idea that she was his, showing a level of affection that made
Salyeris more uncomfortable than she cared to admit.

When it was over, Salyeris gently sung a song as she put on her clothes,
inducing the prince back into deep slumber. His servants would likely think
he had merely drank too much and was sleeping it off. Salyeris knew once the
alcohol and illusions faded and he woke, she would be no more than a vague
idea of a dream to him, an illusion he would never know the truth of.

With that Salyeris left Evermoon, knowing she would be back again until she
was certain she had conceived the child she hoped to have, though she would
be lying if she said Iklahn did not cross her mind for a moment before she
continued into the forest.

Role

Chapter 15

Lesolanya Vanima'ona.

It was painful, beyond much anything else she had experienced, but if
Salyeris had learned anything as a Battlerager it was dealing with pain. She
screamed out as she pushed and with that the pain subsided, a feeling of
relief coming over her, and the wailing of an infant filled the glade. She
glanced over to Rolastia, who tended to the child, giving her a meager smile,
before she collapsed into deep sleep from exhaustion.

She was roused days later by Rolastia, her body now weaker, but recovered.
"Seems Neltouda blessed you with a girl." That was all she said to Salyeris
as Rolastia gave the child to her. Salyeris embraced the child to her,
kissing her lightly on the head. There was no scar, no marks upon the child.
She had not been born cursed. Elation overcame Salyeris for a moment, and she
issued a brief prayer to Neltouda before she looked up at the bard of the
maiden who had taken a seat nearby. Salyeris gave her a nod. "You know now
what must be done?" Rolastia nodded slightly.

"Nobody may ever know she is mine. She must be free from this life I have
led, free from the wars and violence. My duty is not yet over, but my burdens
will not be her's" Again, Rolastia nodded. "She will forge her own path, live
her own life free of all that once bound me. She will decide where the storms
will take her for herself."

Salyeris looked at the child once more. "In time child, you will know your
mother, who she was, and who you truly are. When that time comes, you will
find me ever with you." Salyeris brought her harp to her hand and began
strumming it lightly. The child's hand reached out and plucked a string as a
curious look came to her face, giiggling in delight at the sound it had made.
At the sound of that single note Salyeris smiled. She could touch it, she
could play the harp of her mother.

"Rolastia." The bard's ears perked for a moment but her expression did not
change. "I entrust to you the care of my daughter, Lesolanya Vanima'ona."
Rolastia looked at her. "Vanima'ona?" Salyeris nodded. "Nimkerta is my name,
a lasting reminder of who I once was. But for her, I think Vanima'ona suits
her best."

"What does it mean?" Rolastia asked.

"Beautiful gift, for that is what she forever will be to me." Rolastia only
nodded again and softly replied. "So shall it be."

As Rolastia took the child from Salyeris, she nodded her respects one last
time, and left the glade with Lesolanya in her arms. Salyeris's eyes never
left them til they were out of her sight. A daughter. A dream fulfilled.
Salyeris knew in time she would see her daughter again, and that feeling
filled her with a joy that she had rarely known in her life
