Chapter 5

It wasn't long before the respite from nightmares of the gypsy were replaced
with something much worse, the will of the Dark One. He did not even need to
be asleep to have these waking nightmares. Usually the command was more souls
for his dark majesty, but the latest was clear, unleash the Eternal Night.
Skezok had no longer needed the Scions as he once thought he did, and had
actually tired of Charine's endless collection of tasks and hemming and
hawing about his place in the Chasm. Oddly it was Skezok's slaying of the War
Master Zubei that finally gained him entrance to the Chasm's secrets. Not
unlocking Kteng's ancient formula, his being the blade to slay the dark god
Yzekon, or traversing the darkness of the Inferno and being marked the Dark
One's chosen even when she was too weak to make it herself. Skezok had known
her disdain for those not naturally gifted with magic, but when after decades
she made him one of the Night's Vanguard she had not even had the respect to
be present.


He thought about choking the life out of her eyes with his flail,
but feared the Dark One's rage. Already many of his other chosen had
displeased him and had been turned inside out, or the weaker willed had taken
their own lives foolishly thinking it would save them from his eternal
torment. Besides he enjoyed the new found magic granted by the Scepter, it
brought his hunger to a new level while sating it just enough. Also there
were more magic to be had, even though the magi and priests secretly guarded
it, he knew it could be had eventually, with steel and blood, so much more
blood.
