#407, "Is it feasible to be orderly?"
|
I'm trying to come up with a new char to play, and I know I want to try out a Fort char, and I'm thinking I'd like to be orderly, for eq purposes (go ahead and tell me how bad I am ) Anyway, I'm having a hard time imagining how I'd pull that off if I'm constantly attacking evils in town, like any good Maran-wannabe should. I guess my question is, is there too much conflict between breaking trib law and maran duties to justify an orderly ethos? Or can my char's orderliness be sufficiently manifested in other ways?

There are many ways to play an orderly Maran. You could NOT attack people in town, then use some logic related to innocents and the laws and stuff to justify it. You could attack people in towns, then promptly turn yourself in... you respect the laws, but you have to do what you have to do. You could also despise Tribunal and Tribunal law as a twisted tool of evil, and follow your own orderly code. There's a reason we changed "lawful" ethos to "orderly" ethos a long time ago. It's open to more intrepretation!

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't gonna get whacked for causing too much havoc in cities. Sounds like something I'll definitely need to think about and put in my role though. Thanks again.

If you do intend to be orderly while "causing havoc in cities", you need to make sure your motivations are clear, preferably both via the role entries and via your roleplay. There needs to be something that makes you different from a chaotic Maran, and it needs to be something that comes up at least as regularly as you being wanted.
Just something to keep in mind if you go that route.

I don't know about now, but when I played Tcatama there was buku pressure to obey the laws/turn yourself in if you were wanted/submit to trib requests. I always thought that was ridiculous, unless you are specifically playing a character that wants to respect/obey the laws.
It still doesn't make sense to me why a Maran necessarily needs to have any concept of Tribunal law, or subscribe to it in any way. If I'm playing a rather feral hunter of evil, why do I need to differentiate between a Trib who is trying to kill me for hunting evil, and say, an evil's groupmate? The whole situation really annoyed me.

Easiest answer: Because the former might be good-aligned.

And grouped with imperials quite often. I got smacked down by Vymlak for putting the hurt on a couple neutral tribs who came after me with an imperial, and was told to avoid fighting tribs who were 'just doing their jobs.' I personally didn't care if they were doing their job or not; I saw an evil and two accompli trying to kill me. See my previous post here:
<http://forums.carrionfields.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=10&topic_id=145&mesg_id=145&page=2>
Vynmlak contacted me in-game about it as 'The Spirit of the Ancient Knight,' and explained that he was an imm about to make a comeback, but as of when I was warned, he still had to keep his ID a secret (hence me posting on this board, as I assume it was Shokai--the only active Maran imm at the time). Still, the jist of it was, attack evils in town, and you're purposely provoking Tribs, and you have to respect them for doing their job. I can see not wanting to kill 'good' tribs or mobs, but neutrals who come after you for this always seemed to me to be fair game, as they are protecting/harboring evil.

I have no idea why there would be any pressure to obey the laws and/or turn yourself in as a Maran. If you're orderly, then your character might feel like he should. The cabal itself could care less. Neither Shokai nor I have lawful - or even orderly - tendanices. There could be something mortal-driven... maybe one of the Maran leaders is a very orderly paladin. Or maybe the Tribunal leader is a goodie, with a mainly goodie following, that makes impassioned pleas with the Fort. All of that is fine. But your character still gets to decide.
