Exploration, observation and commerce are only three pieces of the puzzle, but they are very sizable pieces.
How sizable? Well, if you had no role, no IMM XP, were uncaballed and had zero PKs, you could still acquire more edge points than all but a couple dozen characters on the MUD (and have over twice as many as the average character) through EXP/OXP/CXP alone. Well, and you'd have to reach level 51.
Your uncaballed explorer is absolutely supposed to have fewer edges than a caballed, PK-intensive character who also explores, and that's always been by design and is unlikely to ever change. One of the original design goals was to reward characters who participated and succeeded in different avenues of the game.

Again, the system rewards those who diversify. Play a lot of positions and you'll come out ahead.
I was always of the school of thought that the "farmable" sources of EPs were too large a piece of the pie and we addressed that back in December. Personally, I still think the EXP/OXP aspect is a proven loser, but there are others up here and certainly many out there who disagree, so where we're at now is probably a decent balance.

I assume you would create some new avenue to make up those points somewhere else? Because yeah you'd probably have rioting in the streets if you just cut them out of the equation.
Would you get rid of commerce too?

Stop asking the imms to make the game even more un-fun.
