If you are afflicted by something that damages you (crimson, plague, poison etc) and your health is below 50%, then you do get to wake up. That is the way it used to be anyway. There is nothing stopping the attacker from re-sleeping you on the tick though. I used to still kill people by simply recasting sleep on the hour as they tried to wake;q tele.
If you are not afflicted by anything that causes damage, then you will not be woken if below 50%.

Years ago you used to always wake from thirst and hunger as well. Always. So you could famish yourself before fighting a necro and get insta woke on the tick. They closed that loophole some time ago though.

But maybe the game hates me. Especially since Mantle of the phoenix didn't heal me when attacked by fire against mobs. Is that supposed to happen too? I've got a single #### to give...and it's just for you.

Not when you drop below 50%. When you are below 50% already and you take damage. If that helps.

That can cause it not to heal for fire, as a hero.
