I actually think just about every form of A-P is pretty playable, now. They just play to different styles or have different strengths.
If you haven't had a successful A-P in the past (I don't know if you have) I always really like human as a starter A-P because while it isn't great at anything it legitimately can do everything, so you aren't cutting yourself off from options you don't yet understand.

Silly rabbit. A-Ps don't get legacies.
I'm always a fan of leveling slowly with anything you don't know how to play very well; this is doubly or triply true with an A-P because they have such a varied arsenal of offense and, for the most part, so little defense. Whip past the teens too fast and you might not really build an intuition for what kinds of fights lightning bolt spam will win.
The main trick I think, especially if you're human, is to change your tactics to suit your opponent. Some fights lag will win, others direct damage, others malediction, sometimes sleep, sometimes dirt or blind and disarm, other times summon traps or weapon skills or whatever.
A good goal might to be focus on getting controls vs. building a super-weapon. My first A-P died a lot and killed a lot and I refined from there.
