Stat rolling is a thing of the past. If you want to gimp your characters stats, take a flaw. Otherwise, its only the new players that get screwed with stat rolling and not understanding the mechanics of it. I would not see the harm in removing that part of the game at this point. All it is going to do is scare or gimp a new player.

This would mean every character has an extra 100 hitpoints or so, if you assume they would otherwise have maxed their stats. Personally, I don't max my stats and save about 8-10 trains for HP by not maxing my stats. I don't actually like doing it, but the min-maxer in me says it's the optimal strategy.

Part of the reason you don't start with perfect stats off the bat is because some races are inherently more popular than others, even with the exp penalty. Some races won't have perfect stats until ~25 or so, and that's assuming they save a couple practices. While other races will have them perfected ~15 with no practices saved.
I like it.
Seriously, does anyone say no to the original stats you get when you roll a character? I certainly haven't in my last three years.
####, remember when you legitimately had to roll your stats for like an hour because the fluctuations were so wild? I do. That, on the other hand, sucked balls.

I often take still around 2-3 minutes because I need certain stats for each char.
I remember what it was like back in the day. Sure, it was tedious and the auto-rollers were a Godsend, BUT, when you got those stats, you felt like a King.

I always roll until I get
str: max rollable or racial max-1 whichever is lower dex: max rollable con: max rollable
And then I balance int/wis, never allowing wis to be racial max
