#30752, "Immortal notes"
|
Could someone please take a look at the immortal notes I've sent over the past three days pertaining to my character's current status and respond to them? It would be very much appreciated thank you. I didn't know how else to bring this to attention of the staff.

First it's good to see you're back Valguarnera and already taking up projects again.
Second I apologize for the lapse in time between my posts. It's just that I play CF as a means to kill short amounts of time in between going to work, going to sleep after getting home from work, doing laundry, etc. As such weekends tend to get the better of me.
Third I'm not looking to cause any trouble but you're the only other one on staff that even gave me a reply that was reasonably polite other than Grobbak considering that I have been equally polite (or at least so I would like to think) with my notes to immortal and my post here on the forums. Although I don't know if this is because you all think I'm a trouble-making player or not but that is neither here nor there at the moment.
Could you clarify for me what rules exactly does my character's name violate? Because from your post it seems that you may or may not be intentionally implying that the name I used is from a published piece of work when as far as I know it is a fairly original fictional name. If not then I guess I should read more books. I will however admit that it is an incredibly silly name but that's what I wanted. I wanted a silly name to have fun with on a game. I was just unaware that incredibly silly names were illegal given the number of silly names that have been used by other players in the past.
Now I don't want this turn into a big long debate so this is my last post on this topic since I am curious. Are silly names no longer allowed or is just my character's silly name? And if so, is it just because the immortals don't like it? Because even in the fantasy literature that I've read there has been always almost at least one silly name. I mean if it is that this is in fact the reason (or even if there is another reason) it is not like I can do anything about it since you also were kind enough to point out that final discretion is up to the staff. It's just that personally I like to know the reasoning behind decisions.
And thank you for taking out the time to respond to my questions and the work you put into the game. Both you and Grobbak.
As an aside to Enlith: I don't know if you were having a bad day when you made your post or perhaps I read into it incorrectly; but telling someone who doesn't know why they were called to boss' office and just asking a simple question as to why, "Or you can just quit your job. You were called in for a reason," seems kind of harsh (terrible analogy I know but it was the only one I could think of). Maybe I am naive in thinking that it is only fair that a person be made aware of what they did wrong, but that's just me. Otherwise I have nothing personally against you or any other staff member and though it wasn't the most helpful of posts I would also like to thank you for taking the time to respond to my initial post as well as the work you put in to the game.

It's the name (nickname?) of the lead character on a god-awful television show that inexplicably is one of the highest-rated shows on cable. (Picking "Evilkins" as a last name doesn't exactly help your case that it was accidental.) Multiple Immortals immediately made the connection when the name was pointed out, FWIW.
Ah, that would explain it then. I thought you were referring to a book because I don't watch television. Didn't even know what show you were talking about until I read down to Isildur's post about it being Jersey Shore. I'm either working, training at the gym, sleeping, out with friends or doing errands, or doing something else on the computer. That and I didn't actually come up with the name it was suggested to me by another player. Last time I take name suggestions from Scrimbul.
Btw, what is the deal with Evilkins not helping my case? This part is to anyone who knows since I can't be bothered to look it up in google or wikipedia or whatever.
You're correct that players attempt to slip names past us from time to time, and we have always had players that insist they were unaware of the alternative meaning. We aren't mind readers, and we make decisions based on discretion all the time.
Okay, that makes sense. It's just that I was confused when I honestly didn't know anything about the reference and I log in to RotD. May I propose that in the future if it is that a player and admin don't exactly match up times that the staff issue a note to the character in question stating the exact reason they end up there? That way they at least know what's going on in the rare occasions they're like me and oblivious to the latest fad when it comes to American pop culture?
Again thanks for the prompt and courteous responses, I really appreciate it despite you probably being busy helping improve the game. I guess I would've caught the reference had I just did a Google search with "Snooky" rather than "Snooky Evilkins". And with that I'm really done posting in this thread now.

I think he's exaggerating. But there have been a rash of really lousy names of the past few months. Remember clawsten (offense shifter) and tankmonious (defense shifter)? Yeah. That's pretty awful. I'd never even heard of Jersey Shore before this thread, so Snooky to me is no worse than those, melemlelmelmelm or a half dozen other names taken from novels and tv shows that the staff chose to ignore. In the past I've even prayed about it, and nothing happens because apparently the staff watches more Jersey Shore than they read fantasy novels.
Basically there's names that are against the letter of the rules, and then there are names that completely gag themselves on a giant phallus of terribleness. I guess the theory is that the latter don't matter, which would be fine if examples of the former weren't also ignored.

It didn't come up in the Google hits I bothered to look up. 1950's jazz harp player Snooky Pryor was the most obvious connection, according to Google, with other people named Snooky coming next.
After that, I looked up Isildur's TV show from the Wikipedia (second try worked, liked from the geographical location) and saw that the person's nickname there was "Snooki", which is a different spelling even. I just feel that this is a tad bit too obscure to bust. Maybe it was the Evilkins that did it for you.

You'll forgive the perception here, but I was fairly certain that the issue should have been handled in private to some degree. Just because they haven't dealt with your personal issue doesn't mean they aren't making an impact. The game was recently saved from oblivion. Zulgh would be justified in taking 6 months off for good behavior.
>What I was getting at was, perhaps they should get people on >staff who do have the time and interest.
Yeah okay, chump, let's get some people on staff who have time and interest. What the f are you even suggesting here? A recruiting campaign? Let's ignore how stupid it is to say the current staff has no time and interest, in general.

But this is also silly. I argue with them (usually Daevryn) all the time. There are lots of actual issues related to the game where I don't see eye to eye with the immortals.
That said, yeah I'm willing to recognize they're doing me (and everyone else) a favor by maintaining and improving this game. So while I'll appologize for being pointlessly insulting, I won't appologize for thinking that if you like CF you owe them a bit more respect than the crap you're shoveling here.

Become a heroimm and see how much work these people actually do. I was a heroimm for six months and I worked on the mud 40 hours a week, which is basically a full time job. And guess what? I have -nothing- to show for it. And part of it is because I suck, but the other part of it is that running a MUD is tons harder than you think.
From what I understand the MUD blew up recently and they are scrambling to fix it. That takes time. Sorry, it does. They aren't getting paid for this work, and the fact that some of these imms are willing to donate 20+ hours a week for the mud is impressive enough as is. Even a couple hours a week is more than what most people are willing to spend on a volunteer project.
And finding people who have time and interest? Every single one of this imms have proven that they do, at the very least, have interest. Most of them also donate far more time than you can imagine. I bet Nepenthe or Zulg or someone else is busting their ass off at this very second to make CF is an awesome game to play.
