#25855, "Elf learning rates (warning: whine inside)"
|
I was wondering what was up with elf learning rates. I haven't played an elf in maybe 4-5 years (and that was a bard) but I have played a few wood-elves, felar, cloud, and storm rangers maybe a year or so ago and they didn't seem that hard to advance skills.
My current elf ranger is in mid-20's. Only 1 weapon mastered and no defenses mastered.
Int and Wis maxed since level 1
Always leveled alone.
Switched around weapons to try and maximise learning.
Have things been slowed down for elves over the years? To me, the one great advantage of elves is how fast they learn. And they need it given the fragility of the builds.
Okay, whine over, you can return to your regularly scheduled rants and raves.

According to the stats I've kept track on learning rates based on intelligence of the character...nothing is wrong. The learning rates scale up as you would expect with 24&25 being the highest chance (the stats I keep are number of chances to learn vs. number of times actually learned per uptime). So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Nope, nothing has changed there...that's just the RNG messing with you, it's always been 1-3 (though you probably notice the 1% far more often than 2% or 3%...I know I do). So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Level with a group, so you can hit tougher mobs, so you spend more rounds in actual combat, letting your weapons do your damage as opposed to flee/ambush.
The XP Pen on Elf and the higher hp on harder mobs will slow you down the same way that learning alone with a dumb, hardier build will. Splntrd

I actually figured the exp penalty on Elves would INCREASE the relative learning you'd have at any given level because it'd take more time to get there (i.e. more mobs to kill than say a human at the same level).
There'd have to be some benefit to being an elf to compensate for a PK list that has everyone 10 ranks above you in it.
Shouldn't there?

I meant slow down as in slow down how quickly you level, which means more time to take advantage of higher learning rates. Splntrd

I think you have to look at it from a different perspective.
You were disadvantaged for three reasons. 1) Elf low hp 2) ranking alone 3) Ranger skill set.
1) Low hp means your fighting weaker mobs (mobs closer to your own rank, or even below which means you have a smaller chance to learn.
2) ranking alone there is a significant damage to mob decrease, combined with the low hp you cannot handle stronger mobs. As point 1 stated, more closer to your rank, or below. less chance to learn.
3) I tried a wild-elf ranger before, and tried ranking alone, typical output is Ambush. Flee. Camo. Ambush. Dead. Or you may stay after primary ambush, but even then the lesser mobs if you had a good weapon you did most of the work already. It equals less round combat, which is when you are primary defending.
Elf learning rates are perfectly fine.
I have had several elf paladins, i always love them because it basically meant no real time training skills. They do it in combat. I have almost always had my defenses (included getting shield mastery) before the 25th rank.
My only human Paladin, he didnt get shield mastery until close to 45th.

I have seldom fought anything that didn't give me between 200-500 exp (solo) and I haven't been using the ambush-flee-ambush model all that much.
I've done a lot of rangers over the years, including a bunch of heroes of various races. So I'm decent about being able to kill fairly tough mobs, fairly easily on my own. (still suck at PK but that's a whole 'nother story).

My last elf, Firhindil, didn't perfect dodge until level 38 or so and parry was finally perfected on the mob right before I hit level 51. And I tanked a lot and fought in several pks.
I didn't even bother with weapons because it was so tedious.
Probably worth an imm investigating, especially since that code went in that made chars with less than 18 int learn as though they had 18 int. Seems fishy.

No. Those races got a boost with evade, which is why I gave the low int races a boost to learning to balance that out a bit more. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

High int races are almost exclusively high dex races as well. So high int + high dex = learn fast + evade. On the flip side low int races tend to be almost exclusively low dex races. So you get crappier learning + worse evade.
I just tried to even things out by giving a boost to lower int learning. So long, and thanks for all the fish!
