#24238, "In response to Zulg: Pay for 2x XP"

You know, I found a lot in your response to "Test" in which I could present a counter-argument, but I generally consider you pretty cool and I don't need to continue that. For me, double XP would keep me around, but that may not work for other people.

Here's an offer for an alternative:

$5.00 for a week of double xp

-raises money to be used how you guys want, maybe for advertising
-doesn't really show up in the character other than they seem to be ranking a little faster than normal

This, if successful, could lead to more ways to raise money for the game without being incredibly intrusive. Perhaps $5 for faster skill learning for a week.

Could set it up the same way as PBF - just e-mail the character name along with the PayPal donation and in the game, could get a note from the imm when the week starts for that character.

The moment CF starts a pay-for-perks system is the day that I, and a number of other people quit. I have zero-tolerance for any game that gives an advantage to people who pay more.

Anyone else that wants the chime in can, but just because you say "No. No way. I hate it." doesn't mean everyone else feels that way.

And this is more something to spark debate for ideas to increase the numbers of new players. If pay-to-play didn't work, then games like Terris - a ptp MUD that lost maybe 50 people but attracted hundreds more when it switched over - wouldn't exist, games in which people end up buying characters on the black market wouldn't be able to continue, etc. Don't expect that your indignation and ignorance is the be-all, end-all to any argument. How about posting some ideas of your own, or maybe help out by taking an idea someone else came up with and put it into action? Otherwise, hell, you're just another griefer unwilling to MacGuyver a sinking ship into staying afloat.

That there will be no in-game perks for pay to play. At least Valg was very adamant about this, but he's no longer around. Doubt this opinion has changed.

Can we think of any perks like PBF info that don't affect how "competitive" a character is in-game, but still have enough value that people are willing to pay?

Anything that can happen after the character has deleted is probably fair game. Like the PBF posts. But...I can't think of anything besides "more statistics" or possibly "tiered" PBF info that would work there.

What about an option to extend the lifespan of an existing character by paying money? Of course...that could lead to people squatting on leadership spots for undue amounts of time. Could maybe make it so this option can only be exercised *at character creation*.

In general I'm in complete agreement with you that pay-to-play stinks. Just trying to come up with some ways to raise revenue besides the PBFs.

Seriously, if the number if characters on at a given time was 50-100 instead of 25-50 I imagine that the number of PBF's bought would increase by a comparable amount.

Join the marketing effort and help make it happen. More money with nothing to do with it doesn't help.

I don't want to play a game I have to pay for, but if the option of perks were there, I might be more willing to shell out a little bit.

There are a few ideas floating around out there, but most of them have been done before. I feel like there is just a huge resistance to change. IF we had more revenue coming into CF, then we could expand the advertising campaign and have more than 15-50 people on at a time.

Pay-to-play (in the sense of adding in-game perks) solves a little bit of that problem, but if someone else has a better suggestion, I'd listen.

Face it - we have a very retro game, a website that looks a bit dated, and a dwindling playerbase with very little new blood coming in. Eventually, the vets are going to eventually move on to other things and there's not enough players to replace them. Resisting change isn't going to cut it. We need new ideas outside of the game to attract new players. Status quo isn't cutting it.

Personally, I find a 100% free game more attractive than a pay for perks game or pay to play game. Getting new blood is a matter of advertising. The sad fact is that the Imms have been very phlegmatic in this matter and have avoided taking action, even in the situations where the advertising action isn't likely to cost CF money and would mainly require their OK for the matter. One good example of this is the setting up CF in flash game sites using a premade client. No clear immortal stance was presented, even after asking for Imm opinions and thoughts about it.

I thought I said that we're for it but that I wasn't personally going to be doing it. If not, I'm saying so now.

I was thinking of advertising on those sites, but actually being able to play from them is a wonderful idea that I had no clue was possible.

What kind of a person with what skill set does it take to make this happen? If no one volunteers, that should be on the list of things to purchase with marketing dollars.

He found a free flash client from the internet:

http://bc-dev.net/projects/fmud/

I think the best plan would be to check if CF can be put to flash game sites using it. Then someone with skill with these matters should do it. Then we should write a game info that explains what CF is (an online text-based roleplaying and playerkilling game) and credit both CF and the flash client creator. Then write instructions on how to play the game (control your character by typing in commands etc.).

Write roles as a service donation, buy roles as a monetary donation.

Furthermore, I think Seantryn Modan must be destroyed.

Can't say they are great ideas, but they are the best I could do

Pay for your name/desc to be on a mob

Pay for Kasty or someone to write up one of the stories on the homepage featuring (or with a cameo of) your char after you delete

Start circulating hero's decks/cards as items in game and pay to have a card made of your char
