I'm the Operations Director for the "Internet Marketing" arm (www.k2interactive.com) of an advertising agency (www.kranzlerkingsley.com). Basically that entails:
1. Anything computer-related - servers, workstations, network equipment, etc. I occasionally even get asked to work on fax machines and video conferencing equipment (Which I love. Honest.).
2. Pseudo-production manager - make sure all web developers have stuff to work on and know what is next in line etc.
3. Bid-guy - when an Account rep wants to give an estimate to a prospective client for a website that includes A, B, C, D, NOT E, F, and a little G, I tell them how much that'll all cost.
4. Account Executive - about 50 percent of our clients deal directly with me, and I am responsible for adding a small portion of new business (definitely less new business than other AE's though).
5. Search Engine pay-per-click account work (do a search on Google for "indian casino marketing" and my parent company, Kranzler Kingsley, should come up under sponsored links).
That's mostly it. I also end up doing a lot of proofreading of email newsletters, websites, print ads, etc. Ad agencies need proofreaders more than you might think.

Otherwise known as Stay-at-Home-Mom. I cook, clean, garden, and wrastle/teach/chaeuffer two young girls not yet in school. I also volunteer for the local MOMS Club Chapter. As part of this I also host a goofy web site - www.kideas.com - where I document/share stuff I do with my kids (or stuff other moms I know do with their kids.) It might be of interest to those of you with rugrats of your own.
I also do a bit of freelance graphic design work, which is what I did full time (in a design house, not freelance) prior to spawning. Some months it's a pretty solid part-time job.. other months, it's nothing. I also do volunteer graphic design work for the MOMS Club and my synagogue.
And since my current status has made me loathe the "what do you do" question being linked to only what you are paid for, I'll also add my hobbies: enjoying sci-fi and fantasy books and entertainment of all types, Aikido training, hiking, writing, mural-painting and other arts.

I'm currently a line cook in a resteruant(sp) in Shallotte, NC. "Duffer's Bar and Grill"
Before that though I worked for a year and a half on Bald Head Island. I painted for a construction crew which was a lot of fun. Eventually though my boss 86'd the paint department so he moved us over to actual construction, which was a lot of fun also.
Other than those, most of my work has been in the food industry. But I enjoy it. Not saying I wouldn't like to return to school and do something else... its paid the bills so far. "Then hunger proved more powerful than grief." - Count Ugolino and the Tower of Hunger

Southport is alright, but I'm sure you know there isn't much to do there. If you feel like it, stop by Shallotte and drop by Duffer's. The Chicken Gyro and the Cuban are both really good.

Worked in the Animal Care industry for 6 years full time. Bird Keeper or Aviculturist, if you wanna sound technical. Did some field research, conservation stuff.
Quit job a year and a half ago to follow the wife to a good paying step in her career. Contemplating now getting back into the work force in a completely different capacity but still related to zoos in general.
Also teach karate and self-defense to whomever will pay me to do so.

I wouldn't be so cynical about big firm life and the need to hold your nose. And while you evidently have had plenty of corporate work, corporate law work is not the same. Or at least somewhat different.
Having said that, I of course applaud the desire to work in the public sector or non-profit organizations, and have some contacts from my pro bono work. If you want to discuss, feel free to email me.
Either way, enjoy third year, it's busy, but usually very fun.

The short answer is that you are right and that life in a corporate law firm is most likely quite different from life in a big corporation. However, because I did not have a summer job this past summer at a big firm, there is almost zero chance I would be hired by one now coming out of law school. I accept this, although I did not know it when I started. When I entered law school, I did not know any lawyers, nor were there any lawyers in my family to advise me of how to handle law school.
If there are any aspiring lawyers out there, my recommendation for handling law school would be to do roughly the opposite of what I did. The first year is such a key to everything that comes after it that you should put a ton of effort into it. I am talking about 15-18 hour days, seven days a week. Live in the library. Buy every study guide you can find and use them religiously. This should position you to be quite highly ranked in your class, which is the key to almost everything. You might even grade onto journal from this, or you might have to write on, but do try to get onto the main law journal at your school. The first year summer should be spent working with a professor. Ideally it should be someone you like and agree with or someone who is well published. Then you come back after the first summer and do the on campus interviewing. Put a ton of energy into this. Apply everywhere you can and interview as much as possible. This should get you a firm job for the following summer. After that you can sit back and enjoy law school. You will find that the knowledge and habits you developed the first year will carry you through the last two working just eight hour days 5-6 days a week (which is basically a normal workweek for the rest of the working world). The job you get for your second summer almost always turns into an offer for after you graduate. Even if you decide you want to do something else instead of that big firm, most employers are obsessed with your GPA/class rank and this is determined heavily by your performance during the first year, so by concentrating on the first year classes, you should be in great shape for anything you want to do.
I, on the other hand, have a family and did not have a desire to put in that kind of time and risk a divorce. I treated law school the first year (and the second and the third) as a full time job, putting in 8-9 hour days all week and not even taking reading home with me so I could spend more time with my family. I had a good law job my first summer and have developed a wide variety of skills and knowledge and I should be fairly well positioned for some form of governmental job (I hope) but I do recommend the other approach instead (although I still most likely would not do it that way were I to do it again as I value my family time more than anything else.)
Nonetheless, I do plan on enjoying my third year.

Are lawyers or in law school. There are probably tons more. The thing is, though, that law schools are teeming with applicants. I won't quite forget the experience of taking the California bar in a room the size of an airplane hanger.. with over 3,000 other sitters. It took me until the second day to realize that the loudspeaker voice dictating instructions in a monotone drone actually belonged to a real person way up at the front of the room. He was that far away.

Presently, I design and test public safety devices for the U.S. government, specifically warning systems for biological or chemical attacks. The goal is to have devices that can be carried in a backpack, and provide instant alerts if a specific agent is detected in an air or water supply. We've been making progress roughly on the expected schedule on a couple different designs, but that goal is still a ways off.
I'd like to transition into more of an analyst/advisor than a 'widget-maker'. I've had a lot of luck as a 'translator' between technical and non-technical people (or just between technical people who don't overlap in expertise), and you just may have noticed examples where influential people know jack about science. Portions of the government (military, law enforcement, intelligence, the less... uh... "faith-based" (*) sectors of government, etc.) have definitely noticed this, and they've recently been hiring more people who have a research background. So I'm floating resumes while I'm building my widgets, and we'll see where it goes.
valguarnera@carrionfields.com
(*): This is also the term we use when people ask us for impossible things. For example, when you tell us that our device needs to cost less than $500/ea and fit in your hand, and our best-case estimates for the initial builds are about 50-100x pricier and larger, that is a "faith-based" device request. (Fun quote from someone well above me: "I should ask them if they want the handheld $500 device delivered by unicorn.")

Do the people you work with know you are like one of the head-implementor-dudes on an internet text-based roleplaying game?
Am wondering if that'd be a plus or a gianormous negative, in terms of job security...
Oh, and also, the game kicks some serious techie ass. I'm getting a pal involved and he's gonna dig it ;-P.

I apologize if you must work fixing any bugs I have in code over the weekends/after hours/etc, as IBM just cut overtime pay for us contractors and I no longer work weekends or anytime after my 8 hours at work until they come to terms. IBM is the suxxors in terms of taking care of its employees (Not a flame, I swear!!).
Cool beans, man.
Oh, and please, please, get something done to improve their current process!!!!!!!!!!
PEace and Love, and hope to interract with another rational person in IBM...

Heh, I work in the Fairlakes office, Public Sector Deskside. I don't do much with IGS, so we probably didn't interact.
Drop me an email, we can trade sametime.. I'll fix your laptop whenever you have a glitch.

Well, I'm getting really crazy trying to port a linux application that uses "snprintf" (which is C99 standard) to Windows + Visual Studio. So my question is do you know when it will be in Visual Studio exactly as it defined in C99 ( _snprintf or sprintf_s are poor replacements )? And if it is already, which version should I use?
And another question, whom should I blame for it?
