Chapter 3

You know, Yerek tries, and that's all I can say. But that was number twelve.
One more incident and I'm afraid they're going to banish him. For a duergar,
I've never seen someone try to avoid a fight, and he seems to even like most
svirfneblin. But there's a group that just won't let him be. He seems to be
past his mischief, he hasn't stolen anything or started a fight on his own in
years, either that or he just doesn't get caught anymore. In any case, I'm
going to send him off to the Academy before he gets officially banished. I've
saved enough, and he's plenty strong and capable. By Whiysdan, he's got
Courage and strength for ten, he'll do fine and I know he wants to follow his
big, well older anyway, brother. I'll talk to him tomorrow morning.

A hard day, they brought my natural son's body back to me. He died fighting
drow wizards I'm told, and didn't shy from the fight, even when he knew he
would die. Yerek will take it hard, I know he wanted to fight alongside him
in the village, but we aren't always Lucky, are we?

They were only whispers, but they caught my ear, and I followed along,
something about the Thirteenth Son and the Omens. It was a duergar trading
mission to Udgaard, so I tried my Luck and asked to join along, to sell my
bag of emeralds with them. They sneered and berated me the whole trip, but
shiny gems talk, as my grand-pap used to say, and they let me follow along.
I worked out what they were talking about, and I have a strong, VERY strong
suspicion, that Yerek is the Ninth Omen they were talking about. I've written
down what I can understand about it here.
