Chapter 4

In duergar lore, there is an apocalyptic prophecy in which the duergar of
Aran'gird anger the Lord Whiysdan to such a degree that he unleashes a series
of calamities upon them, ultimately killing the duergar king burying him
beneath a heaping pile of gold. Here follows the thirteen omens - with brief
descriptions and of which Yerek was the Ninth Omen.

First Omen - A subterranean earthquake in which a crack formed inside of
the city and unleashed an attack by displacer beasts, kicking off the
Year of Tragedies.

Second Omen - The death of the crone. During the displacer beast attack,
the ancient duergar crone and seer was killed, not by displacer beasts,
but by another duergar.

Third Omen - The Year of Tragedies. A number of key deaths amongst the
ruling class, coupled with mass deaths in the lower castes due to food
and water shortages caused by damage from the earthquake.

Fourth Omen - Rise of the Drow. The rise of Xzelyx as Commander of
Battle has been interpreted as the Fourth Omen. While there was some
disagreement amongst the elders, it was eventually accepted.

Fifth Omen - The Union of Giants. Another contested omen, but the elders
eventually came to agree that the marriage between Viera and Vaskal was
in fact the Fifth Omen.

Sixth Omen - The Untethering of the Elements. With the disappearance of
Jormyr from the Pantheon, the para-elements have no point around which
to coalesce, causing chaos where it was not previously found.

Seventh Omen - The Snake and the Hand. The duergar king was attacked by
a huge snake just beyond the gates of Aran'Gird and lost his hand in the
battle.

Eighth Omen - Second Earthquake. Another earthquake that roiled the city
and increased the size of the crack from the first earthquake. Coincided
with the birth of the duergar king's son.

Ninth Omen - The Thirteenth Son. The first and only son born to the duergar
king on the thirteenth day of the thirteenth month. This came to be Yerek.
He was cast out by the king in hopes of his death

Tenth Omen - The Arrival of the Pale Bride. Word has reached the Underdark
that the Pale Bride has been spotted roaming Thera, marking the Tenth Omen.

Eleventh Omen - The Rothe Rebellion. A rebellion of svirfneblin slaves, led
by the Thirteenth Son.

Twelfth Omen - The Massacre of Upper Cragstone. The inevitable response to
the Rothe Rebellion.

Thirteenth Omen - The Rise of the Son. The Son, aligning himself with Lord
Whiysdan, receives the mark of the Lucky Lord.

Chapter 3

You know, Yerek tries, and that's all I can say. But that was number twelve.
One more incident and I'm afraid they're going to banish him. For a duergar,
I've never seen someone try to avoid a fight, and he seems to even like most
svirfneblin. But there's a group that just won't let him be. He seems to be
past his mischief, he hasn't stolen anything or started a fight on his own in
years, either that or he just doesn't get caught anymore. In any case, I'm
going to send him off to the Academy before he gets officially banished. I've
saved enough, and he's plenty strong and capable. By Whiysdan, he's got
Courage and strength for ten, he'll do fine and I know he wants to follow his
big, well older anyway, brother. I'll talk to him tomorrow morning.

A hard day, they brought my natural son's body back to me. He died fighting
drow wizards I'm told, and didn't shy from the fight, even when he knew he
would die. Yerek will take it hard, I know he wanted to fight alongside him
in the village, but we aren't always Lucky, are we?

They were only whispers, but they caught my ear, and I followed along,
something about the Thirteenth Son and the Omens. It was a duergar trading
mission to Udgaard, so I tried my Luck and asked to join along, to sell my
bag of emeralds with them. They sneered and berated me the whole trip, but
shiny gems talk, as my grand-pap used to say, and they let me follow along.
I worked out what they were talking about, and I have a strong, VERY strong
suspicion, that Yerek is the Ninth Omen they were talking about. I've written
down what I can understand about it here.

Chapter 2

Yerek's adoptive father, Vongveng Gemwrangler, passed and because he had no
other family, and both his natural and adopted son had left to fight for the
Village of Battleragers, his personal affects were delivered to Yerek
Yev'tasy, now a famous warrior and Mageslayer of the Battleragers. Left to
Yerek was a modest treasure of gold and gems, the "Thirteen Things" Vongveng
had collected throughout his life, and his journal. What follows are some of
the important snippets regarding Yerek.

I found a duergar pup in the tunnels near Aran'gird today. It was wrapped in
exceptionally fine cloth, I expect an unwanted pregnancy and some sort of
palace intrigue afoot. I would have kept walking, but that was my thirteenth
thing of the day. Now, the other twelve had been unique and uncommon gems I
had noticed while working, but this was thirteen, and we can't leave the
thirteenth thing laying around. I gathered him up and brought him home.
I sure hope the women of my cavern know what to do with it. It's been a long
time since I had a babe in the house, and my wife was still with me. Ah well,
Thirteen knows Best, praise the Lucky Lord.

Where in the Thirteen Hells did my Luck go?! All used up when I found this
pup I reckon. The little bastard BIT me this morning! But I did sort out that
he likes meat a lot better than mushrooms, I guess I'll have to visit the
rothe-butcher and see what he can do for me. The old woman next door said to
try feeding him live meat, but I don't know if I can find enough gems to keep
us in basilisk hatchlings and I'm certainly not going to feed him live rothe!

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. The guards brought Yerek home
just before dinner. He got into a fight, and while he didn't start it, he
certainly finished it. He beat three brothers in a fist fight, and then
pummeled their father who tried to stop it. I'd be lying if I said there
wasn't a measure of pride, those boys were asking for it, but there's going
to be a cloud following him around the Upper now. Lucky Lord be praised he
didn't kill anyone.

Chapter 1

Yerek was born to the current king of Aran'Gird on the Second Day of the
Great Gods in the Month of the Dark Shades, which is of course the 13th day
of the 13th month of the Western Calendar. He was also the 13th child of the
king and the only son. Unfortunately for Yerek, this was also the ninth of
the thirteen omens of an ancient Underdark prophecy in which the King of
Aran'Gird is ultimately deposed by the Lord Whiysdan. Seeking to rid himself
of the child and hopefully put a stop to the prophecy, the king ordered Yerek
banished and abandoned in the Underdark. He was found and rescued by a
svirfneblin trader whose own son had gone off to join the Battleragers, and
so through his adoptive father and brother, came to learn of the evils and
dishonor of wizards, and the pride and courage found by true warriors. As he
got older, and parts of his true duergar nature shined through, he cause too
much trouble for his adoptive father by stealing from and fighting with the
good citizens of Upper Cragstone. As such he found himself banished again,
and went off to join the acadmey and take a place alongside his adoptive
brother as a Battlerager.

Yerek is jovial, so far as duergar are concerned, often making jokes and
laughing. Being a duergar of course, his humor could be called dark, at best.

He does like most svirfneblin from the outset, and will even use some
svirfneblin sayings and anecdotes in his speech.

His focus in the war against magic is all around being a great warrior, the
use of magic is for the weak, etc. Over time, I would expect him to fully
adopt the cause as his own.

He follows Lord Whiysdan, being raised in that faith by his adoptive father,
and will seek him out.
