Chapter 1

I was told that I appeared on the steps of the monastery, wrapped tightly,
lovingly, and yet abandoned. Feristile told me that people often fear things
that are different. My eyes, the luminescence beneath my skin, betrayed that I
was not like others. I spent my youth among the monks, gardening, meditating,
gardening, and meditating some more.
I absorbed the teachings of Mouldrinar, peace from detachment. Though I loved
the kindness and the way they would sometimes be benevolent to those down the
mountain, I never felt settled there. It all felt so incomplete, inwardly
focused.

Mouldrinar's teachings may have brought peace to the monks, but
peace didn't feel like happiness to me. The knowledge of the suffering that
took place below our refuge tortured me.

Though I was taught that none were born violent or peaceful by nature, it
seemed obvious to me that some were born with darkness. Perhaps it was the fact
that I could see the pulsating crimson hue that colored those who wrought
destruction. The rest of my adopted family could not perceive it.

The final tenant... to choose the path of peace by my own free will. I could
not choose it. I could not stand by. I could not stand idly by. So I left...
down the mountain, to the city of Galadon where I heard tell of a Paladin named
Garrick who showed me another path, a code, the path of the Paladin.

I needed to live into myself, no longer contained by the structures and
patterns of the monastery, I would dedicate myself to peace. The peace I would
find would go beyond myself, it would be won through my hands. What never
happened in the monastery was the creation of justice, only detachment. I will
make justice.
