Chapter 1

The sky turns black and the forest grows quiet. Placing his hands upon the
tree before him, he feels a wetness against the bark. Pulling his hands away,
he see that his hand is covered in warm blood which has oozed from the tree.
As he stares in horror at the tree, the bark begins to flake away and fall to
the ground. Slowly something begins to take shape previously hidden by the
bark. Wiping the seeping blood away from the tree he peers in for a closer
look, only to find it is his rotting face that he is looking at!

Gasping, Lanathalis bolts up right from his sleep drenched in sweat and his
heart racing. Looking about, the room is as it should be as he can hear the
gentle wind blowing outside in the crisp fall night. Again, this nightmare
keeps happening again and again and he has no answer for it. He ponders if he
should call out to his older brother but he knows he will only be mocked for
being afraid of the dark. The sound of his beating heart now drowning out any
sound in the room, Lanathalis grips his blankets tight and hopes for sleep
which he knows shall not come.
