Chapter 6

Karzalynn was born and raised a half-elf in the fields south of
Darsylon. She knew no mother, being raised solely by a man who might've
been a brother, older perhaps only by less than a decade. He was known
to her as Jaym. He was already familiar with the way of the lands, and
might have been described by some as being a ranger, of darker skin and
wild eyes. He has been described by Karzalynn as beautiful, and she
loved him dearly. Together they lived as children of the wilds,
sleeping under the stars in grass nearly head height. Jaym always
provided what he could for his companion, only taking for himself what
he needed. And somehow, for many years they lived on the plains, quite
content with each other's company, adult and yet child-like, separate
and yet somehow the same entity. It wasn't until her twentieth summer
that anything came between them. They were traveling through farmland
north and west of Tar Valon, and had set up camp for the night. It was
a dry summer, but the wind was blowing hard, with the promise of a
thunderstorm on the way. It was just becoming apparent to the pair that
the night was the same crystalline beauty it had always been, when
their entire lives were sent into a downward spiral of pain and
surrounding field, grabbing at the friends on the grass. The first
caught Karzalynn in a bear hug, raking his claws all across her bare
stomach and shoulders. All she remembered from there seemed a blur, but
perhaps Jaym put up a fight. When Karzalynn awoke, the field around her
was in flames, and the orc who had seized her was lying dead or
unconscious on the ground. Embers were catching on her clothes and
hair, and stinging on her face. Her brother was nowhere to be seen. In
a daze, she jumped up and half-stumbled, half ran from the field,
eastward to Tar Valon. And from there, Karzalynn knew only one thing
as she looked back on the burning field, black smoke billowing and
blocking the crystalline stars. She had come from the flames.
