Chapter 1

Zaruthral's time in Seantryn was spent staying clean, atleast to all
outward appearances. She changed her appearance most drastically this
time, keeping most of her facial and arm feathers plucked nearly clean.
Combined with some makeup, a thin veil, and tinted glasses, she could
almost pass for a human. A deformed, slightly flawed human, but few
would guess there was an arial under this disguise.

She would use her newfound anonymity to seek out odd jobs, since it
would be a long while before she could return to the mainland to
withdraw her blood money. The copper was scarce, but she didn't go
hungry, and didn't need to kill to survive. She still did kill, of
course, but it was more for sport in the dark of the night rather than
out of necessity. Sometimes she killed those who were rude to her on
the streets or in shops, disappearing into the city to stalk her prey
for days before inflicting her killing blow. Her nights were kept
busy, as there was no shortage of buffoons that were quick to show her
disrespect. She considered their deaths to be a public service, and
that the city would be better because of it.

It was no coincidence that her odd jobs eventually landed her work
with the Town Watch, offering some measure of respect that she craved.
Her superiors recognized that her skills were wasted on walking the
streets in a uniform, however, so they allowed her to remain
undercover to try to catch criminals in the act. She did well,
sniffing out trouble as the city slept. The Seantryn Modan Watch
helped refine her skills for summoning, as they paid hefty fees at the
local magical college as she trained days in the black arts. At night,
somebody would need to die. If legitimate criminals could not be caught,
she found it easy to manufacture situations where others would do. Nobody
seemed to care that every one of her cases ended up in the death of a
suspect, as long as the streets were safe and all outward appearances
suggested that a criminal got what was deserved.

She had begun to lose track of time in Seantryn, as each night began
to drag into the day, so entire weeks passed by without memory. She
reckoned a few years had gone by, and had her fill of life in this
remote city. It was time to return to the mainland to carve out her
niche. Besides, the city Watch kept trying to promote her to
magistrate. She was running out of excuses to refuse them, and knew
she could never get away with the killings as long as she was under
that magnifying glass. It was time to leave before she was exposed and
the bodies were linked back to her.
