Chapter 3

Zaruthral is not necessarily cruel, and does not consider herself to be
evil. She has little regard for others when it comes to their comfort
or safety, however. She is also prone to lash out with violence
whenever threatened, cornered, or just plain confused. Her only
concern is that she be left alone, and more than a few dead bodies
have turned up in remote areas when they violated her personal space.

She has few memories of her early years, before training as a
professional killer. Zaruthral was physically weak as a child,
constantly bullied and beaten by others in her village, savagely
mistreated by her parents. One sibling ran away, the other died
mysteriously, with her father being the main suspect. Father was the
local law enforcement though, so nobody dared question him. Mother was
always "sick" in bed, usually drunk. There was nothing in Zaruthral's
life worth looking forward to, and nobody that cared for her so she
only looked inward upon herself at the expense of everything around
her.

One day, Zaruthral woke up and seemed to open her eyes to a new light.
She would not be anybody's victim any longer. While her wretched
father was getting ready for work, she crept up behind him and lunged
a carving knife through the side of his neck. She felt no remorse or
pity for this brutal, evil creature before her. In fact, she felt a
little relieved, if not outright elated. She had brought this tyrant
to his knees finally, and exacted retribution for 17 years of bullying.
Saying goodbye to mom after this was almost surreal, as she lay limp
as a rag after I twisted her neck until it snapped. Rest well, mother.

Everything after this was a blur, as she traveled from village to
village, staying out of sight of the law. She kept as low of a profile
as possible, remaining little more than a shadow to most people's eyes
as she stole and murdered to scratch up barely enough money to survive
on.

Role

Chapter 2

Little can be said of Zaruthral's adventures after leaving home, as
incidents of bloodshed were frequently forgotten before the blood
could be wiped from her talons. She valued life very little, except
when it came to her own. She did not enjoy killing, but saw it as a
necessary tool to achieve whatever she needed accomplished.

Her notoriety in the underworld became apparent when certain guilds
would seek her out to carry out unpleasant tasks such as eliminating
rival guild leadership or merchants that weren't paying their
protection. She frequently refused such offers on principal (she did
not want to be anybody's pet), killing the messengers who dared waste
her time on such proposals. She ended up being hunted by not only the
law, but also from every seedy crimelord looking to cash in on the
bounty on her head. No place was safe for her any longer, no matter
how frequently she changed her name and appearance. She drew far too
much attention when she defended herself, and such attention put
entire villages on alert making her unable to accumulate the wealth
she needed for her future plans.

Zaruthral needed to get away for awhile, long enough so she was presumed
dead and nobody cared enough to seek her out any longer. She crept
onto a random ship on the Hamsah Mu'Tazz docks and decided to sail
wherever it took her. Her money was safely stashed away in several
dozen different banks under names only she knew, stained with the
blood of countless fools who were not worthy of keeping it from her.
Someday this wealth would buy her power, authority, and most
importantly, respect so she did not have to hide in the gutters like
a rat. Some day. For now, she would make the most of her self-imposed
exile and hone her skills.

The boat landed in the remote city of Seantryn Modan, where she would
roam copperless and hungry for weeks. She would start over here,
somehow erasing the mistakes of her past.

Role

Chapter 1

Zaruthral's time in Seantryn was spent staying clean, atleast to all
outward appearances. She changed her appearance most drastically this
time, keeping most of her facial and arm feathers plucked nearly clean.
Combined with some makeup, a thin veil, and tinted glasses, she could
almost pass for a human. A deformed, slightly flawed human, but few
would guess there was an arial under this disguise.

She would use her newfound anonymity to seek out odd jobs, since it
would be a long while before she could return to the mainland to
withdraw her blood money. The copper was scarce, but she didn't go
hungry, and didn't need to kill to survive. She still did kill, of
course, but it was more for sport in the dark of the night rather than
out of necessity. Sometimes she killed those who were rude to her on
the streets or in shops, disappearing into the city to stalk her prey
for days before inflicting her killing blow. Her nights were kept
busy, as there was no shortage of buffoons that were quick to show her
disrespect. She considered their deaths to be a public service, and
that the city would be better because of it.

It was no coincidence that her odd jobs eventually landed her work
with the Town Watch, offering some measure of respect that she craved.
Her superiors recognized that her skills were wasted on walking the
streets in a uniform, however, so they allowed her to remain
undercover to try to catch criminals in the act. She did well,
sniffing out trouble as the city slept. The Seantryn Modan Watch
helped refine her skills for summoning, as they paid hefty fees at the
local magical college as she trained days in the black arts. At night,
somebody would need to die. If legitimate criminals could not be caught,
she found it easy to manufacture situations where others would do. Nobody
seemed to care that every one of her cases ended up in the death of a
suspect, as long as the streets were safe and all outward appearances
suggested that a criminal got what was deserved.

She had begun to lose track of time in Seantryn, as each night began
to drag into the day, so entire weeks passed by without memory. She
reckoned a few years had gone by, and had her fill of life in this
remote city. It was time to return to the mainland to carve out her
niche. Besides, the city Watch kept trying to promote her to
magistrate. She was running out of excuses to refuse them, and knew
she could never get away with the killings as long as she was under
that magnifying glass. It was time to leave before she was exposed and
the bodies were linked back to her.
