I tried to stick it out regardless of what was coming, and most of the time I knew I was dead because I often didn't have potions of teleport/recall.

As for the shields, those weren't a problem. Prayers from another player would have been fine if they were a grurk priest, just not from any other god.

It's nice to know that players notice when you pass up on fun things like a hell trip because it conflicts with rp. I was already questioning even going because of the way you enter and some of the things necessary to progress once inside.
