Chapter 5

For more than a month, Golthazar had been stranded alone in this place that
was so foreign to her. She had grown accustomed to hard rock, darkness, and
stale air. Now, she was surrounded by soft vegetation, the light of days,
and wet, heavy air. It wasn't difficult to find little creatures to eat, the
place was crawling with life and plenty of drinkable water in streams. At
night, the jungle turned into an inhospitable place. If it wasn't the local
tribe of headhunter savages, it was the panthers lurking in the dark that
vied for the stench of Golthazar. Inherently, Golthazar had keen eyes in
the darkness and quick feet to evade capture. She was constantly on the run
or finding a new hiding place. She would gather moss and cover it with her
scent and hide it to throw off the jungle cats.With palm fronds, she
wrapped her boots to soften the shape of her tracks. Golthazar was smart, but
her hatred of the forest began to wear on her. She longed for stone
civilization and searched every day for a break in the jungle. One day, she
came to a stream and followed it from sunrise until sunset. For one week she
followed this river until she came upon a large black sail streaked with red
above the tree line. Peering through the thicket she made out the aft of a
ship with a large image of a bloody shackle upon a low sail. Her luck had
finally recovered. This was a ship her cousin worked as first mate to bring
slaves to the mines, and it was called 'Grurk's Rising." The captain had
anchored far from the shore as the water was shallow in this inlet where
saltwater met freshwater, and the crew set off in search for supplies. Sea
men were beginning to load the ship when Golthazar had emerged, covered in
vines, leaves, and leeches.

"Cousin!" waved Golthazar.

"Cousin?! The Eternal Abyss spit ya out!" exclaimed her cousin.

Chapter 1

The sounds of the jungle are a cacophony of distraction as Golthazar slowly
creeps silently through the thick vegetation. Hoots of monkeys, screeching
birds, and wheezing lizards drown out the occasional crack of a twig as she
treads carefully with vigilant eyes deeper into the harsh terrain. She tries
her best to cover her tracks but her damp clothing, soaking with sweat from
the oppressive humidity of this morass hell hole, and increasing fatigue
addle her mind as exhaustion sets in. Looking behind every so often she
stands completely still and does not blink. Now that her eyes are adjusted to
the jungle terrain, she keeps them wide open and stares out into the
surrounding thicket. The primeval forest stands still and for a quick moment
she sees the top of low palm frond give a slight wiggle back and forth in the
distance. Adrenaline surges down her spine and in a fluid motion she sinks
down into the underbrush, frantically searching for a place to hide. The
hunters were getting closer.

Chapter 2

Two months before the jungle, she was in the cool stone hearth room of the
clan dwelling. These duergar lived in a communal stone grotto outside the
mine of Aran'Gird and her clan, Goz'ir,were excavators for the mine. Every
day rock was to be sifted for precious gems and gold, and in this task
Golthazar was supreme. The Goz'ir clan was known for their keen eye, strong
hands, and masterful chisel to exhume the greatest treasures of size. As the
lore goes, an emerald the size of an apple was discovered by Golthazar's
grandfather, polished, and later set within a darkened mithril crown for the
king.


The treasure brought fame to the clan as well as a surge of slaves to
continue the exploratory mining. Golthazar was sent to oversee the operation
and after months of mining, the team of excavators broke through to a shaft
of trickling water. The shaft lead up to a glimmer of green light and
Golthazar was the first through the hole to explore. She placed a miners
helmet upon her head with a flickering candle. The stream had an odd shimmer
to it and the green light from above played with her eyes. Golthazar climbed
up the path of the stream and discovered a pool collected above. She dipped
her hand into the pool and in the basin she brought forth a hand of golden
sand. Ushering the gold quickly into her pockets, she chortled loudly to
herself. The water had been filtering a massive vein of gold and in the
collections of pools, pure gold ore collected. She sat for a moment in awe
and her curiosity grew to the green light above. It was alluring and
powerful enough to make her eyes water if she stared too long. Curiosity and
greed began to fill the duergar's veins and she began to frantically scale up
the craggy stream. Was it another emerald? Would it be the biggest find of
all time?

Chapter 3

While grasping wildly upwards she began to pull loose rock that bounced,
knocking heavily on the way down.

As the boulders fell and soon settled, noise continued to creak and crack as
the weight of the rock displaced a natural equilibrium. With eons of heavy
gold sand spreading the weight out evenly, the fallen rocks landed together
near the open crack and placed too much weight on a weakened wall. Suddenly,
the sound of rushing rock and water filled the chamber as Golthazar looked
below. The ground began to shift beneath her feet as she scampered onto a
stalactite and hugged it with all her might. The grunts of the miners could
be heard as gold, water, and rock blasted through their excavated hole, which
soon became plugged with rising levels of sediment. Looking back up she
could see the glimmering light and instinctively searched for a new foot and
hand hold to scale upwards through this treacherous shaft. As her hand flung
upwards it soon found roots and she latched onto them and found herself
drowning in the green hue.

Chapter 4

She threw off her miners cap and covered her clenched eyes with her hand. It
was so intense and blinding all she could see were ill-defined red
capillaries in her eyelids. It was painfully bright and as she removed her
hands to let her eyes adjust she slowly opened them. She creaked open her
eyes only enough to where vision was still blurred and she could see the
thick weave of her eyelashes. Golthazar brought one above her brow to shade
her cracked eyes and with the other hand reaching to find thick vegetation at
her finger tips. The green light that had mesmerized her was the reflected
light of the lush, green plants thriving in this hot, sunny environment. And
here she thought it was the source of all emeralds. Damn.

Chapter 6

With a grasp of arms and a customary head butting, Golthazar was on board
"Grurk's Rising" with a mug of Hyena's Brew returning to Hamsah Mu'Tazz, the
port of call. Golthazar vowed to raze the jungle one day with a fiery axe and
build a great stone monument to herself in the ashes. She hated the woods
with a new passion, but had appreciated the strength she grew as it honed her
arms and legs. There was a new self confidence gained and an outlandish idea
came to her head. Once the ship reached the Seaport, Golthazar would not
return to Aran'Gird. She would cast aside her legacy of jewel mining and
create a legacy of her own. There was an opportunity to take now that such
time had passed in her disappearance. To return to the mundane, or to take
advantage of a new life for something greater. It was settled. That night
she pushed her bound cousin overboard and assumed a false identity. The
secret was safe with the fishes.


Reaching Hamsah Mu'Tazz, Golthazar sold her pocketed gold for new armor and
weapons, setting off to prowl as a new beast forged from the wilds. Great and
terrible things were sure to come! Terrible, but great.

Chapter 7

Alignment - Orderly Evil, brought on by traumatic survival in the harsh and
unforgiving jungle of chaos. Whereas before the event, she lived a neutral
and evil life of a cruel, greedy duergar miner.


Disposition - She secretly loves the jungle for how it strengthened her will
to live as well as the pure hatred enjoyed as a result of this lustful
secret. She is of the mindset where nothing is impossible and completing a
task by any means possible. Her view of the cities is one where tribunal
makes it safer than the wilds, much more orderly than the Empire,
appreciates the honesty of the law, and there is plenty of money to be made
to appease her greedy nature. Her views of the jungle gave her superior
strength with the ideology that the strongest creature in the jungle does not
live in the jungle for it has strength to escape and live without it, only
returning to the jungle to kill when it pleases.


Religion - Personal justice against the friends of the wild wood and her own
vendetta to be cruel yet maintain order of the chaotic path she had to
suffer.Her strange attraction and how she aligns herself to be the polar
opposite to it reveals her internal struggle to be more honest with herself.
Being able to admit the wilds helped her in some way will be a work in
progress while she copes with the denial and finds her fresh start with the
Tribunal. The looming fact that her struggle in the wilds and the hatred she
has for it eats her from within, and to release this hatred she will fight
for order and slowly become more honest, just as the steady glaciers of
Deormdel slowly free her mind.


Cabal - Tribunal guardsman appear to her as the largest army in the cities
she lives in, as well as a potential revenue source as she aims to join their
ranks and hold some form of command over them. A captain of the guard sounds
like a position she would want for good pay as well as a way to punish those
who do not see her way.It would give her status she desired, protection she
feared to be without, and boosted her ego for authority and control. She had
witnessed the Empire for some time but decided one palace is not enough. She
would seek to claim Galadon, Hamsah Mu'Tazz, Seantryn, and even Voralia as
her own stone jungles. Places Imperial guards not dare patrol when faced
with superior guardsman of the Tribunal. For positions within the Spire, the
bloody shackles carried by Vindicators excite her appetite for the hunt. If
there were any of the guardsman Golthazar wished to be, it would be
Vindicator.

Chapter 8

As Golthazar spread her cruel justice onto the criminals of Thera, she vied
to serve a greater purpose as a harbinger of the glacier. Her Lord Deormdel
was without a doubt the most magnificent vision Golthazar had ever seen. The
day he revealed himself to her, she felt icy blood running through her veins.
Her mind became more focused and her movements more precise. It was as if
the piece of her soul that was broken could begin to repair and grow
stronger. By seeing the perfect warrior, Golthazar knew what to strive for.
His bright bluish-white eyes saw into her soul and knew her like that of a
shepherd. Golthazar would be trained and learn the ways of the glacier,
striving to be one part of the balance in Thera, forever quelling chaos to
maintain order by honesty. The halls of the glacier were seldom empty, and
with guidance from the followers Aufang and Eleri, Golthazars had a much
better understanding to please her lord and one day bare his frosty mark.

Chapter 9

High atop the Eastern guard tower, a Galadonian halberdier sits watching the
tree line in the distance. As the sun sets a figure darts out from the gate
below towards the woods down a narrow trail. The figure was low and fast on
their feet and the flapping of an animal skin on their back almost gave the
illusion of a wolf or jungle cat being whisked away by the neck.

"There she goes again," said an archer coming from behind the halberdier to
peer over the side.

"What do you think she does out there?" Said the halberdier.

"She goes to feed of course," assured the archer chuckling to himself.

"I swear, that thing is too dangerous to be cooped up in here with us, I've
seen how she looks at the moon when it's full," suggested the halberdier as
the two turned back from the side of the watch tower.

As the figure disappeared into the thicket of trees, crows and other birds
suddenly jumped from their perches and became airborne as a shrieking death
cry came from somewhere in the distance. "Quit yer snivellin!" bellowed a
voice.

The two guardsman whipped their heads around back to the tree line only to
see the cloaked figure return to the gate carrying a very noticeable bloody
red scalp.

"I'm beginning to think whatever that is, isn't justice, John," said the
archer.

"She's a cruel beast the Provost hired and nothing else, however effective
she may be, you've got to admit, at least it's happing out there to keep the
peace in here, right John?" Said the halberdier. They were both named John.

The two Johns nodded to each other as one grabbed a bucket of water and
rushed downstairs to wash away the blood trail.When the halberdier returned
he suddenly remembered something he overheard.

"Say, John, don't tell anyone I told you this, but I was on special guard
duty with her last eve and you wouldn't believe what I saw," said the
halberdier.

"Let me guess, a walking ghoul Emperor offering her a position to train and
lead her soldiers?" said the archer "You've really got to fasten that helmet
better, you've taken too many blows to the head to remember that I was also
on special guard duty with you last night and I saw the whole thing!"
exclaimed the archer playfully punching the halberdier in the arm.

"Ooof! John! That's where that damned wildcat bit me! Now who is forgetful!"

"Ah, sorry John," said the archer looking suddenly sheepish.

"Anyways, she won't be our problem anymore if that happens," said the archer
fiddling with his bow like a single string guitar, " and I heard they were
planning to make her Vindicator too."

"Vindicator? When has there ever been two Vindicators?" Said the halberdier
thumping his halberd against the floor to the rhythm of the bow string.

"When has there ever been two Johns?" said the archer plucking his bow.

"Well that's not the same thing, now is it?" Said the halberdier drumming
away.

Chapter 10

"PIPE DOWN UP THERE YOU TWO!" Bellowed the mighty voice of Captain Garfic.

They both became silent as their fidgeting stopped and they both sat very
still. A few moments passed in silence when they heard off in the distance
the familiar "Quit yer snivellin!" followed by the cries of pain. They looked
at each other and shivered only to give furtive glances at the buck of water
and back to one another. "No, I JUST did it last time," whispered the
halberdier and the archer let out a disappointed groan.

Chapter 11

Many moons had come and gone since Golthazar took the seat of War Master.
Having proved herself to the immortal Gaspare and her Lord Deormdel,
Golthazar was rewarded with power. Throughout the land she was known as the
Freezing Hammer of the Glacier; a testament to her faith, the truth, and
brutal skullcrushing. She was strong, yes, though like every Imperial she was
soon looking for more to sate her desires. Surely one would think, baring
the mark of her Lord, is it not enough? It is without a doubt the shining
jewel of her life, forever on her hand distilling her indestructible fortress
of faith in honesty. Now she wanted to strengthen her bond with her Lord and
remain worthy in his eyes. The path that brought her to this power was one
of order and darkness, balancing the forces of chaos and light.As always,
chaos and deceit locked her in battle for truth. To maintain this truth
Golthazar set out to slay one seething with deceit. Adira was a treacherous
foe, though impossible to lure due to the Nightreaver's self preserving
nature. The ranger Zszuan was another who wore the same hat as Adira, though
it too was not keen to fight or lure due to self preservation. Golthazar was
certainly not afraid to die for what she believed in, though the foes she
wished to defeat did not share this trait. Where to find a worthy adversary,
one who embodied the deception Golthazar sought to destroy?

The Arch devil Baalzebub. Ruler of his domain in a castle built for deceit.
Navigating to this nemesis would be no easy feat. Golthazar would have to
lead an impressive army to the depths of hell itself for a true fight. No
matter. Adira or Zszuan would not give her what she desired, though the devil
would be ten times more dangerous than the two reavers combined. Golthazar
would take the head of this devil and consume his black heart to strike a
mighty blow in the name of the Glacier. Yes, this would be a worthy test of
her faith and she would not falter until it was complete. Her frosty beard
would soon feel the fiery lashes of Hell.

Chapter 12

Frost collects at the foot of the cot as a hulking, bearded form slouches
over a collection of wicked weaponry. A bloodied rag wafts away a few flakes
of ice from the hilt of a grinning faced mace as she cleans what must be a
tendon stuck in the sharp crevice of the brutal weapon. An open window to her
sect hall lets in morning light on her back, a tactical position in her mind
to never keep her eye off the door. She halts her movement suddenly and the
flutter of wings swings her eyes around to find an owl on the sill. An
assassin perhaps? The well trained bird bites down on twine between the beak
and a wax sealed scroll falls to the ground. She watches as it falls, one end
hitting the ground before the other and it becomes still after a wobble.
Looking back up the bird has left quietly as it came, save a small dash of
white mess. Grumbles escape the lips of the old woman as she wipes her rag on
the sill and then leans down to pick up the scroll. "What the 'ell is this
all 'bout," she mutters to herself and her mind leaves 'weapon cleaning time'
and shifts to unraveling a curious scroll delivered in a curious way.
It reads:

It was to be the last words from an old friend set to echo in the mind of the
grizzled War Master, riddle by age and scar tissues from years of bloodshed
and carnage. Her throat tightens up and she swallows hard. Golthazar always
appreciated strong women of power for some reason. It empowered her. In
moments before battles, after battles, and sometimes when the world had been
conquered for a few moments - celebration at the Inn of the Eternal Star left
many marks in Golthazar's mind.Her promotion to Vindicator, War Master, War
Master Vindicator(however brief it was), the wedding of a Lich, the mark of
her God to serve balance and remain honest to herself and others, and even
the loss of friend and foe alike when drinking to their memory felt like the
honorable thing to do. For they all had their part in the balance, every last
one.


Looking down at the scroll she slowly folds a crease in half, again, and
tucks it into her belt. She moves her thick hand to her eyes and clears the
jagged ice from the weathered crows feet on her face. The glacial mark on the
hand flares blue for a moment and she moves to stroke her frosty beard for
comfort.

"Ter absent friends, los' loves, old gods, and the season of mists; and may
each an' every one eh us always give the devil 'is due" she whispers. "I'll
meet yeh down there soon 'nough, yeh bloody breedin' wench."

Turning to the cot she eyes her two most favorite maces for crushing gnome
skulls. A wicked grin forms and in her mind a scene forms - a lichen-ridden cave
gnomes fleeing for their lives, and Golthazar cackling madly. The best therapy.
