There's is no interraction between gun/target.

There is interraction between mace/sword when a swordsman is parrying the mace. He is observin the mace-wielder's techniques, countering them, and in general learning some useful information about maces.

It's not hands on practice, but it is learning, and half-rate improvements of the weapon you're fighting against is a very realistic idea.
