A storm giant can't use the 2-hander skills while using a shield. The idea is you have to have both hands on the weapon, even if you're big enough to use the weapon in one hand.

As for your second point, I'd actually say that wearing a shield as a storm giant 2-hander will hurt you more than help you most of the time.
