Chapter 1

For a duergar to say something was ugly, you had to know that it was truly
hideous. This baby, was just beyond discusting. A large bulbous nose, and
deep set eyes adorn a face that even a mother couldn't love. Which is how the
poor babe found itself laying naked in a tunnel deep in the underdark.

A whisper quiet tread of footsteps came upon the babe, who didn't even try to
cry out. Looking down the old drow saw the babe and knew at that moment he
could finally have the companion he'd yearned for after leaving Teth Azleth so
many years before. Grabbing a moth-eaten blanket from his pack, he reached
down and scooped up the babe, quickly wrapping it and moving out into the
tunnels.

As the years passed, the young duergar grew into his gangly body, and as if it
were possible grew even uglier. His "father" watched over him, teaching him
the ways of the underdark. Oft times speaking of his life before. How he had
been a student in the academy of magic, and sent out for being inept in the
arts. Originally sent to muck slave pens Kariagar's father became jealous of
those who would not have him. His hate for that school grew until one day he
found himself inside staring at the masters back. He had been delivering
slaves for various magical experiments. As the Master looked down at the last
slave, he felt the unmistakable sharp pain of the point of a dagger slipping
up between his ribs. Falling to the ground as the dagger split his heart in
two, he looked back at Kariagar and his Father. The dripping blade hanging in
the young duergar boys hand.

"Yes, that is the only good user of Magic now boy. A dead one." said his
father as he took the dagger from his boy's hand.
