Chapter 1

Wiglaf Roinalda Wilfreda Copperdust Biggolung Glittering Ironjaw was born and
raised in Hillcrest. She is the second daughter and fifth child born to her
her parents, Roinald and Wilfreda Ironjaw. Roinald was a well respected guard
in the town watch, and Wilfreda enjoyed cooking, naming her children, and
styling hair. Like most Hillcrest gnomes, her parents raised their children as
cautious and considerate individuals, mindful of their community yet with a
strong sense of self-preservation that, to someone lacking the wisdom of the
gnomish folk, might be mistaken for selfishness.

When she was about 25 years old, Wiglaf was sent to school to become the sort
of well-rounded citizen that Hillcrest gnomes are expected to be. Her school
years went by quickly and she learned plenty, although her teachers never quite
managed to tame her insatiable curiosity nor her youthful zeal for exploring
new ideas. However, to her father's delight, what Wiglaf really excelled at was
fighting. In the self-defense classes that most of her peers were less than
enthusiastic about, she was almost always the most exemplary student.

After school hours, she loved frolicking around with the sons and daughters of
the farmers who lived on the east side of town. Many were the days she would
come home from dinner covered in mud, with a whole new set of scrapes and
bruises, the result of long wrestling matches and childishly violent games of
chase.
