Chapter 1

Fierce northern winds swept across the light mountain wheat, causing it
to ripple much like a crashing wave of the sea. Two twirling figures stood
a stark contrast to the dancing crop. Their feathered wings beating to
propel them away from each other, or towards each other in defense and
attack alike. Before long their play was done and the son limped along
with his father's graceful walk, another night of bruises would be his
prize for another day of lessons.

Aruk'kal was the clan name of this remote arial tribe, located far to the
northeast of Udgaard. Aruk'kal were not a widely known tribe, though the
local rumors of them spoke volumes. They took full pride in being capable
of living off of the land, with their hands and the simple tools they
fashioned from what they hunted. Leg bone scythes for cutting the wheat,
simple wood cudgels for hand milling the crop once it is gathered. They put
stock in themselves, their abilities, and what they understood. What the
Aruk'kal did not understand though, was the wide expanse of mystic and
divine powers. It was rather common for mothers of Hillcrest to tell their
children horror stories relating to the arials burning and drowning well
spoken adventurers who had accidentally stumbled into the lands of the
Aruk'kal.

Akedeh's trained daily, when he had completely all of his chores of course.
His father had recently began outlining the mechanics of fighting the sick
ones. Making sure Akedeh understood that their head is where the disease
infected them the most. Light quick strikes to the vulnerable areas about
the head was said to shake the sickness, there is no true cure for it but
enough vibration to the head could still the survival instincts within the
infection. The simple wooden cudgel was a staple in this technique, and the
weapon that Akedeh became familiar with to do what he could to save Thera
from the spread of disease.
