Chapter 5

Janos awoke with a start, the familiar ringing noise
shaking him from a dreamworld of which only he was aware.
Standing up from his meditative position on the Chasm's cold
dark earth, he concentrated on the noise's origin inside his
head. Closing his eyes and regulating his breathing, his
vision began to shift and swirl with colours, displaying
different locations in the land surrounding the Chasm
before finally settling down underneath the surface.
Shifting and swirving through the deep tunnels of the
Underdark, bypassing different creatures
killing, mining or researching, the vision finally settled
on what Janos instinctly knew was his home. The vision was
brought upstairs slowly, as a beautiful mature Matron
meditated in her room.
Janos watched and waited, as the Matron opened her eyes
slowly to gaze deeply in to where Janos's vision has brought
him. Janos smirked, waiting for some clever reply or snippy
reactive belittling comment to which Janos would simply nod
and walk off. His surprise was apparent when the Matron
opened her mouth and screamed 'KILL HIM, THAT WEAKLING!'.
All of Janos's regal training, all his etiquette and all
of his stonehearted hardening of his soul
immediately cracked and vanished, as the one person
whom all of his life was devoted to screamed for the
death of her son. The vision quickly reversed
through the Underdark, passing everything
previously albiet at a blinding speed.

Janos opened his eyes and regulated his breathing once more.
Training that was taught to him by the most logical of Magi
in the Underdark, teaching him to relax and desensitize
himself from the vision that struck his brain and
rattled his nerves. Taking in the cold damp air of
the Scion's Chasm before him, he took notice of the
things surrounding him. Nothing had changed in the room,
his clothes were the same and the only noticable
difference was an extreme amount of sweat on his forehead.
As he went to wipe the sweat from his brow, he took notice
of a note that had dodged his intial observation of the
Chasm. Opening the note, he read the words that
he knew were going to be there:

"Janos, My Son,
You have failed me. Your membership within the Eternal Night
has done nothing to further our political power in the
Underdark or even on the surface. The Magi who you
wished to learn from have fled in recession from the
hordes of Barbarians, Imperials and Accursed Lightwalkers
that have infested the surface. You are now alone and
because of your lack of research in to this beforehand, I
hereby cast you out of my arms and out of the house of
Ist'Uss.

You are no longer my son. Would I see you on the surface one
day, if I was to not kill you immediately with my dirk,
I would walk by you without acknowledging your coming from my
womb. As far as myself and the House are concerned, you never did
