You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

Some of the special-purpose forums are listed below along with their replacements (as of writing):

#4, "Coding help"

I know it says one idea, but age-con thing pre-existed, so I'm going to ask for this instead:

There is a lot of coding ability in the CF playerbase. Some things can obviously not be shared and "crowd-sourced" for the semi-obvious reason that you don't want people to be able to look at CF code.

However, while looking at the long-term stuff I noticed this: http://forums.carrionfields.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=58&topic_id=225&mesg_id=225&page= which I'm fairly certain I (or one of my fellow players) could do, in C, given the code to work off of. I can't imagine what would be, in any way, secret about how locate object works, so seeing the code for how it currently works, and modifying it to condense objects seems like a fairly obvious way to get some coding help without having to open up sensitive areas of the code.

I'm not sure how many other examples like this exist (things that could be sort of open-sourced), but I'm guessing there are others.

So my request is, for items like this, open them up to the playerbase.

Like signing NDAs and such.

I really don't see that happening. There are folks on staff who are also interested in this, and I would rather hand things like this off to them, as opposed to one of our players.

I'm not sure how any of our players would expect to understand what all the helper functions were doing, much less which ones are available, much less test their code before sending it back. We run into these exact same problems having new coders join, and it's a lot of work for the existing coders. I don't see tossing in a bunch more people who aren't on staff into that mix.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!
