#38209, "Steering towards sportsmanship"
Edited on Fri 27-May-11 11:22 AM

On a battleground thread, Thror said this:

"Somehow CF has steered towards being a game of sportsmanship. While I respect the intentions, there are instances when sportsmanship clearly contradicts roleplay."

I agree on both counts and just wanted to make a comment without derailing an already long death thread.

Sportsmanship does contradict roleplay, and in fact if people didn't play for fun/sportsmanship would make a lot of different choices. While there are exceptions, most roles in Thera would indicate that you should probably full-sac your enemy every time it's feasible. You should probably also gang them down as severely as you possibly can. Of course there can be RP reasons you wouldn't do that, but then you're still going out of your way to avoid it when I think it's obvious that if you hate someone enough to kill them you probably hate them enough to smash their belongings.

CF has always had some level of compromising rp for sportsmanship; There was never a time when full-saccing was the norm. But Thror is right that sportsmanship has increased. Corpseguard exists now, for example. I think there are two interrelated reasons for this. One is that the playerbase is just more mature which makes us more considerate in general, and smaller which adds a level of community familiarity. The second is that the game has gotten more time-intensive to be at a competitive level. Part of that is the nature of the game (no more purple potions) and part of that is a result of the smaller more experienced playerbase (when the game is made up of more high-prepping vets that raises the bar in general). Also regear sets are more time-consuming than they used to be. An unlimited jeweled broadsword and some skull rings just won't cut it in today's CF. Some of that is the availability of better gear, and some is the veterans again.

Personally I think that as long as CF's mechanics are moving away from grabbing a couple of purple potions and jeweled broadswords and being competitive, we really should keep the higher level of sportsmanship.

Kill characters, but treat players with respect. If you are a douche (and a lot of you are), you're likely to convince the player to log off or delete. A small playerbase isn't fun.

All this talk about playing to "win" and roleplay is ridiculous. The players who make the biggest differences in cabal wars are the ones everyone treats with respect and doesn't grief. It doesn't take anything to disrespect a nobody who you can dominate. But that's what everybody does. I'd like to see less griefing noobs, and more griefing vets, then the roleplaying arguement might hold weight.

Have you not played for very long?

When I first started playing it was the norm that I get summon/ganked by groups of 3+ and full looted to the pies.

EDIT: To add, it's possible they weren't actually saccing all my stuff but dropping it somewhere. I didn't know my way around and by the time I got to my corpse everything was gone. So it felt like a full-loot/sac either way.

---------

Sportsmanship is good. However, people should not EXPECT their enemy to stand over their body and guard their things. Nor should they expect to receive the GIFT of their stuff back. Both are nice, of course, but it shouldn't be such a given that people complain when it doesn't happen.

I don't think hating someone enough to kill them warrants destroying all their crap either. They are dead. That is enough for most of my characters' RP usually.

Nope, they were definitely saccing it. After all, why wouldn't you leave someone you just killed totally naked? Dropping it someplace isn't much more difficult than hitting sac 1. on it after you drop it.

I was always wearing aldevari stuff heh. I thought the shield there was the best (because I didn't have lore/identify).

I've played for about 15 years or so. I don't remember if it was maple.can or one server before or after that, but it wasn't carrionfields.something. There were arbiters, masters and such. So I haven't played since the beginning, but I've played for a long time.

Full looting used to be the norm, but I never experienced routine full saccing. Usually if your corpse was empty they'd either tell you or you could ask where the stuff they don't want is and you could go get it. Or they'd just say they took it all. Either way, it didn't seem like they were usually saccing everything you couldn't use. But maybe there was a time before I started playing that full-saccing really was the norm. I suppose I shouldn't say "never" when I didn't play from the very first minute the game came up.
