The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. #2676, "Area affect spells."

I've always thought there should be more entire area affects from big magical battles. Ever wonder why iceballs and fireballs could be flying one room away, and you'd never know about it?

I think some of the more dramatic spells should have a chance of doing an area echo. This would allow those in the area, but not directly nearby to know that something important is going on nearby. Sure, yelling does that, but not really to the level that it should be.

c 'fireball'
Local effect of 'extra special' spell:
The explosion of the fireball rushes past you.

In another room:
A dull roar, and the crackle of flames can be heard in the distance.

c 'pillar'
Local effect:
The waves of thunder from the lighning leave your ears ringing.

In another room:
A loud crack of thunder can be heard nearby.

Not to leave warrior types completely out, perhaps let them have particularly powerful parries, or more dramatic war cry's that act more like shouts.

In another room:
The ring of steel echo's in the distance.

or

In the distance, someone shouts, 'Face my blade, weaklings!'

Another possibility is to make this something that either the troupe gets as a cabal power (being vocal and flashy is their thing), or can teach to others who want to be more impressive, or just make it a quest skill somewhere, perhaps at an arena where gladiators like this type of thing.
