You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

#79, "Focus toggle for anti-Spam in large battles:"

Could you code it so in large group v groups there's a toggle which allows you to focus only on those people who you're engaged with, meaning:

The echos for people you're hitting,
The echos for people who are hitting you,
Death echos.

i.e.
Ignoring the spamlicious stream of damage verbs that you may well not be interested in and that distracts you from important stuff going on.

Maybe make it an edge or something. I know others have complained of spam in large pvp battles, and I'd certainly appreciate it.

Cheers, Santa Zulg!

This would be a huge undertaking, specifically due to the way messages are handled (player a fighting b, player b fighting a, everyone else in the room). I don't want to re-write the "everyone else in the room" part to try and parse this out.

Then there are the things like echoes for spells, which are (player a casting spell, everyone else in the room) at which point you wouldn't know who the target it for an area spell, so do I show it or not?

This is just a nightmare scenario.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

The chaos seems somewhat appropriate for fights involving large groups, that is as the number of combatants increase so does the amount of chaos, in mud terms, combat spam. That's how I've always felt about it anyway.

Plus, I know the first time I use this I will miss my healer/bard or something getting bashed mercilessly and will die horribly because of it! :p
