You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

Some of the special-purpose forums are listed below along with their replacements (as of writing):

#69, "Charge set"

(Copied from my anaconda post buried somewhere on the shifter board)

Polearm specs could use a little something, so how about making charge set trigger vs pounce (+ pursuit)? Pounce is a strong ability that's very good in 99% of fights, and this would at least create a unique option to counter that and make pole specs a bit more appealing. Ditto for that paladin counterstrike & any other similar ability.

Charge set is basically you setting your feet, planting a polearm, and getting prepared to take a blow. Pounce is chasing you down and continuing a fight before you ever get the chance to do any of that.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

That was more of a game balance idea than anything else (though if you go by such a strict definition of charge set it doesn't really make much sense that it blocks surprise attacks like blackjack or ambush).

I tend to agree. I seem to recall it used to work against pounce with the last pole spec I had... which was a long time ago. If it can block instant attacks, I don't see why it shouldn't block a continuing attack, maybe more quickness than strength based. Also this doesn't affect that many people, I haven't seen but one tiger of note, in the last few months anyway. But this is just my 2 cents.

What I don't like about this idea for charge set is that pounce and pursuit are automatic skills, a plainsrunner fighting in plains terrain cannot turn off pursuit so it becomes advantageous for the pole spec to flee as much as possible producing more oppurtunities for charge sets to fire off. The other attacks you mentioned are all initiated by entering a specific command.
