#586, "Make Herald decorators and tailors more flexible"

Herald decorators and tailors are pretty boring. Sure, you can get a fun rp-fitting tunic or a trinket made, but they are utterly useless beyond rp since the items that can be worked on tend to be in style of "a hunk of rock that can't even be held" or "a mighty wool coat of +0 to everything".

So, here's my idea: allow decorators to work on treasure type objects, and tailors on armor. Keep the requirement that the item has to be unlimited since it makes sense, and there's plenty of unlimited treasures and armor that are worth wearing. Obviously, tailors would be able to work only on specific materials (cloth, silk, leather, hide, fur, maybe others?).

If you need additional convincing that this is indeed an awesome idea... well, which would promote more interaction between players, a Herald who can turn your hunk of rock into a Slightly Different Hunk of Rock, or a Herald who can turn your plain old opal ring into a polished ring of opal carved with the symbol of your distant homeland? And which would be just plain more *fun*, without detracting from anything (that I can see)?

Let decorators decorate unlimited treasures, but all modifiers on those treasures are reduced to 0. I think this is important simply because there's so much good treasure and not very much good "miscellaneous" items that make sense to be decorating. Decorating pebbles to make statues was a little odd for me.

Let tailors modify cloth/leather/silk/hide/fur armors that are unlimited. All modifiers are changed to 0.

This way you won't be creating anything of any value, but your options for material to create from are increased.

In the world of killing someone for their limited gear, what is to stop me from making my best set look like a suit of fine leather from the academy, or turn it into the equivalent of ghost equip gear. People shouldn't have to identify every piece of gear in your corpse to determine which one of them is the etched dragonscale pendant.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

That was exactly my point.

>Keep the requirement that the
>item has to be unlimited since it makes sense

That is precisely to avoid the complications of disguising your wide coppers as charred leathers.

But I could disguise my charred leather bracers as wide coppers? It goes both ways.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

If your opponent is illiterate, yes. As far as I remember all decorated/tailored items have a "handmade" or "handsewn" prefix. And what has been stopping those eeeeevil heralds who totally want to ruin people's pk fun from turning those completely useless clothing items into five color dragonscale mail (with a handsewn prefix) so far?

I just don't understand the resistance to this idea.

For the same reason I regret allowing players to set their own warcries. It is far more effort for me to police than it actually adds to roleplay.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!
