That's because there are a crapload more spells than skills, and it will match the FIRST one it comes across. In case of lightbind, you just tried to check your ability in the lightning bolt spell. Try spell lightb. In the case of conjure, you checked against conjure animal, you'd have to do spell 'conjure e'

I'm leary to change the lookup function because it's probably used in many different places and I don't know what it would impact.

With sp conjure e, you still need to start with quotes. I notice that sp word works just find. Why is it that some multi-word spells seem to work without quotes, and others need it?

Multi-word spells without quotes are the equivalent of the first word. So "sp conjure animal" will work because it's really doing "sp conjure" which is for conjure animal. Any spell that requires the second word needs the quotes around it.
