#151, "Mercy toggle"
|
Essentially what this would be is a toggle you could turn on and off and the players discretion. What I was thinking was that instead of always having to kill the person that you are fighting, what about if you were able to instead beat them to the point of senselessness. You would still be able to kill them if you wished when they were in their unconscious state, or maybe even strip a few things off their body if you wanted, but I think this might be a fun way to add another dimension of RP to the game. For example:
Instead of seeing Bobs' Ultimate smite devastates you! Bobs' Ultimate smite EVISCERATES you! Bobs' brutal assault MASSACRES you! You are dead....but Carrion Fields isn't done with you yet.
You might have, (with the toggle on):
Bobs' Ultimate smite devastates you! Bobs' Ultimate smite EVISCERATES you! Bob suddenly strikes at your head with the blunt edge of his weapon, hitting you square in the temple.... Bobs' mercy shot saves you from death, but rattles your senses so much you slip into unconsiousness.
You can't wake up!
Otherwise, without the toggle on, you would just finish the kill like normal, and go on your merry way.And then, if they take something from you that you are wearing you might see:
Though unable to take action, you groan slightly as someone harshly pulls something from your body....
Now, obviously, it would look a bit better than that, but the general idea is there. That way, there might be more room for characters to really RP out a basic disagreement that leads to a scuffle. This way people who normally wouldn't want to kill each other (friends, lovers, sparring partners) can go all out to fight for their beliefs, without biting into the CON of the other player once the fight is over.Plus! You could then have awesome move like scenes, where one characters friend runs into the room and just sees:
Joe2 lies face first here on the ground, obviously unconsious and badly beaten from battle....
Leaving him to wonder who did it, or be attacked by a hidden foe, or whatever. Plus, you wouldn't have to have a ridiculously long timer on it either. Something akin to necro/AP sleep or maybe a blackjack.
Just thought this might be a cool idea instead of always having to worry about killing someone when you get into a battle. Which might work well not only for people who know each other, but characters who have taken a vow to never kill, etc. etc.
Oh, and they would obviously have to heal back from convulsing when they did finally wake up, unless something with DOT was still affecting them, IE poison, crimson scourge, plague, whatever.
Just a thought Santa Zulg. News flash, everybody on this ####ing MUD wants to be Rambo. We should have called it RamboMUD. ~Daevryn~

Not because I think it's a bad idea, just because it doesn't balance well in a PK environment. An example is that by not actually killing them, and going into this mercy stage means that you can strip things off their body but nobody else could? It feels like way to many extra things to worry about for little gain.
Your examples are basically, "I want to spar with a friend and not kill them". I don't want to optomize for that scenario. I think there are better options (like an Arena) than a mercy toggle. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

True, though I was more thinking that the unconscious state would be much more like what happens when you actually die. Anyone could come by, who was not under lvl 11, and loot you as normal. You ((or whoever came by in their range)) just would have that opportunity to decide whether or not to hurt their CON or not. Or follow a role or not, etc.

Now while I do agree that there is an element of the sparring thing in there, and I do think the Arena might be a good idea for that, what I was more focusing on was the rp aspect of this toggle.
Like my example with the unconscious guy laying on the ground as a trap for someone else, or the character sworn never to kill, etc, etc. That way you could still have a full blown fight out there, but with the possibility of another purpose behind it, rather than to just kill the guy to kill them.
And still, if this idea doesn't quite sit right, and balance is still an issue, then why not the idea you mentioned of the arena. The toggle for mercy could be set in there if the characters wanted and perhaps put a big, long, long timer you have to wait in between fights so its not abused. That way you wouldn't have people merely sitting outside the arena fighting all their battles to an unconscious state, healing up and then going back in without actually going and playing the game.
Could be told something like:
Your toils within the arena weigh heavily on you as you try to head back inside.
A gladiator guard says: "Take it easy there friend. You'll get another chance. Why not come back later when you're fully rested?"
Again, just a thought. News flash, everybody on this ####ing MUD wants to be Rambo. We should have called it RamboMUD. ~Daevryn~

Actually...it's almost worse. They are now basically asleep, anyone can loot their body, and they can't get up and get back for an attempt at getting their things back.

The Arena has been something tossed around for many years, and it's a massive project to do it right. We'll see if someone wants to revive and run with it. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Would it stretch the fiction too much to let them be ghosts while unconscious? Then they could voluntarily decide whether to materialize and form a new body (and lose the con) or else to get sucked back into the old body after a timer and not lose the con. This gives both the winner AND the loser an interesting choice to make. Win-win. Furthermore, I think Seantryn Modan must be destroyed.

Kinda goes against the mercy idea if they can elect to die. Like I said, I don't see this happening. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

This can't be the optimal way to deal with someone. I've yet to see anything proposed that doesn't make it potentially better/more incapacitating than actual death, and all that will be is annoying as hell.
As for the claims of a pacifist role, I call shenanigans. A pacifist isn't going to beat you within an inch of your life.
Pacifism: someone opposed to violence as a means of settling disputes
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
