The Gallery of the Ecstasies
This gothic room, is twice as long as it is wide and accommodates five
stained glass trefoil windows alternating in the red and blue backgrounds.
The four-panel lancet windows depict hellish scenes of carnage and torture
mixed with poetic quotations. Beautiful carved gothic arches above create
an apse with a graceful vaulted ceiling of black marble surrounding the
tracery in the organ loft above. Gothic clustered columns form the base
for the deep ribbed vaulting suspended from the roof timbers. The fireplace,
thirty feet high, is a replica of the Black Manse. Figures, scaled to give
the illusion of greater height, depict disturbing hooded and cloaked figures.
Their faces and expressions, almost caricatures of humans, show varying
attitudes toward those within their sight. Within this hall, the Muse
displays the 'Ecstasies', those works of art she deems worthy to be placed
on exhibition. Paintings, poems, various sculptures and other creations
adorn the Gallery.
