You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

Some of the special-purpose forums are listed below along with their replacements (as of writing):

#115, "Outlander Thieves"

I had an in-game discussion about this quite awhile ago, but only got one person's view.

There are items a thief can use in the Tree, but to my knowledge, I've never seen a thief in the Outlanders. When it was discussed, the general consensus was that thieves are tied too closely to civilization and are not to be trusted or traveled with. Were the items for the exception to the rule, or were they intended to be used as a normal thing? Also, are certain kinds of thiefs disallowed within the Outlanders? I could understand that any thief who joined a guild in a city would not be admitted. Also, its well known that assassins lose hide and assassination. Do thieves lose anything other than hide?

I don't plan on creating an Outlander thief in the near future because it would make me really obvious. But then, perhaps if there were some information about the view of the Ancients to this matter, there would be an occasional player other than me who would be willing to give it a try.

Thieves are not even included in the "distrusted" category, if you read the decree in the Tree of Ages. Thieves do have some ties to civilization, but they are purely based on function and not on philosophy.

A thief can in fact be inducted into Outlander. They will, however, suffer significant penalties to certain skills that are city-based. In the design of the cabal, we invisioned thieves of the trapper or poisoner variety as very good potential outlanders in spite of these penalties, which is why those items have been included in the Refuge.

I wouldn't advise trying it with a thief with city ties however.
