#8625, "The Tactics of Titles."
Edited on Thu 12-May-05 11:05 PM

Hi there. Thanks for joining me. I'd like to discuss a subject that, to my knowledge*, hasn't been brought up much, if at all, over the years: tactical titling.

What does having a "tactical title" mean, to me? Quite simply, it's a title given to a character that tells something about them that can be both harmful or detrimental. Let's take the Acolytes. They have very obvious, "heart-on-my-sleeve" titles that let you know exactly what they are. Same goes for Imperials. I mean, not only do you know that someone is in the Empire, but you get to know their exact level of power in the heirarchy. Now, what I would like to discuss is whether or not people in other cabals should be getting the same thing on a mandatory basis. Cases in point: Maran and BattleRagers.

A Maran has nothing to hide. In fact, they should have no problem advertising the fact that they are members of the Holy Brigade of the Phoenix quite loudly. In a tactical sense, this lets good-aligned characters know who to contact if they need some gnarly smitin', and it lets the bad guys know who to watch out for, as well as who to hunt. BattleRagers, who have powers that when encountered for the first time by a character who does not know that X player is a rager, could prove to be quite fatal. Also, I don't see why berserkers wouldn't be well-known in the lands. I mean, hell, some crazy bastard who runs around waving axes at anyone who reads books is going to develop a reputation pretty damned fast.

From a purely aesthetic sense, more titles slapped on names usually makes people happy. I've never had a complaint against it (except for Kjelror's last name, which technically wasn't a title).

Any thoughts on this?

*My knowledge includes an addiction to browsing CF forums that has persisted since the mid-to-late nineties. Granted, that much skimming has caused eye damage that I can only guess at, which may have had the effect of making my vision bounce across information without absorbing it first. Throw on some old, old THC that lies somewhere in my body, and it all adds up to an iffy equation...what the hell was I talking about again?

When I play a paladin in the fortress, I would definitely like Maran slapped on the end of my name for the world to see. However if I am playing a class that visually cannot be immediately defined, I would prefer to keep anonymity as long as I can. Surprise is a great thing to have on your side. I do get irritated sometimes by not being sure what people are villagers, but again, I'm betting they would prefer people be kept in the dark til they figure it out themselves. Honestly a villager berserker should be the easiest one to figure out.

I don't see this change coming any time soon. *shrug*
