I think it would be more realistic for gemstones to not be affected by the "not something they sell" price degradation for vendors. If a vendor sells only pies, and someone offers him a diamond for a few I think he would be alot more willing for a semi fare trade then if it was something he didn't normally sell. The logic being gemstones were more like currency in medevial times then really being considered trade goods.

No vendor will turn away a valuable gem for a couple pies.
