#72098, "Coding, Bug Fixes, Immorting, Semi-Open Sourcing"
|
This post is not meant to be a dig on the imm staff.
The players notice that there isn't much coding being done. I think we're pretty much okay without new stuff going in, but the lack of bug fixing is pretty noticeable. I think the sane and sensible among us fully understand that Umiron and Scarab are just people with other responsibilities and that interest in coding for CF is probably something that comes and goes.
I'd like to suggest that you consider taking on coder volunteers from the player base who do not want an immortal character but would like to lend their services to the game. I understand that the code is so heavily modified as to be completely jacked up and that the learning curve is steep. I think it's still worth trying.
We're a dwindling crew aboard this vessel. I don't know that we should go fully open source, but it's probably wise to start taking help wherever we can get it.

Take for example the lag bug. How many hundreds if not thousands lines of code is there to check to see what is causing it (even looking g for one single character that is incorrect)?
Once you isolate it, fix it, how many more tests do you have to run to ensure it is not screwing something else up somewhere else. And if you find out other thing out of wack.. fix that. I am sure it would be like wack-a-mole.
I am no coder, but I doubt this is something that part time coders could isolate and then fix as easy as you make it sound.

As someone below astutely pointed out, even if they take on easy menial tasks it enables someone more experienced to do the harder work

fwiw there are at least two imms who are, hopefully, soon to move into positions where they can actually help out w/ coding. No idea if their tasks will include bug fixes. But, even if not, their taking over non-bug-fix coding tasks should free up other folks' time to work on bug fixes.
