#6872, "Thoughts on quests."

I've noticed that recently I haven't been inclined to do automated in game quests. The puzzle ones at least, I won't get into specifics. One of my problems with them is that there just aren't enough clues. I find that I have to ask other people in game how to do certain parts because I've exhausted most common logic and then even after I get the answer to that part I can't figure out how someone would've figured that out on their own. Now I know I'm not an idiot so my question is this, why are many quest parts designed for you to scour 500 rooms looking at 50 obscure room descriptions and walking in every direction looking for hidden doors? A good example would be a quest where you have to answer riddles...that to me is a good quest. Its not easy but its something you're capable of figuring out on your own without needing to cheat. Scouring for hidden stuff isn't mentally challenging, just ridiculously time consuming. So many of the quests I've tried to do have been like that. Another example is the "You're not worthy" quest, where there are hints every step of the way until the end in which case there are no hints and frankly, after 3 years, I've NEVER been able to figure that part out.

Is it just me or is it unfun to find parts of the quest that have no hints? I hate having to ask people IC or OOC how to do steps to a quest but they are made so ridulously hard/time consuming that I see no alternative, does doing that make the game any more fun than having old style quests that you got clues and could actually figure them out if you used logic?

My pet-peeve would be the fedex type of quests, where you get absolutely no hints on where to find the item in question. That rat trap still has me stumped.

That one just requires a bit of lateral thinking. I completed that quest in about 10 minutes.

And I was only able to do it thanks to some hints on Dioxide's board.

Actually...you have figured it out, you just don't want that to be the end.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I didn't figure it was there just as a tease . I know once they fixed that exploit no one has ever had it but I figured there was another step. ####, that sucks. Thanks though, now I can stop trying .

I still remember the conversation I had with the imm who wrote that area after I first figured out that quest.

Me: "I think this is how it works. Is that true?"

Him: "Yup."

Me: "Dude. That's evil."

I got the impression that maybe a later area by the same author that never actually got written was going to change that somewhat.

Not that it was a huge deal or anything, but I was only on my fourth, maybe fifth character and had no input other than having seen someone request the piece of paper to get the quest started, and I accomplished it. So semi-difficult but solvable quests are definitely a boon to the game. Other quests, I've been given either hints to or outright walkthroughs (in game). Many of them, I just scratch my head wondering how the hell anyone ever figured that out.

Maybe this already happens, if so - ignore me, but as part of the area-review before it gets put in place a few hero imms should run through any quests trying to solve them and rate the difficulty.
