#6768, "Wuss cake or making an exec decision?"

I am currently playing a good character whose skin would make a nice trophy for many of the evils in thera at any time. My question is simple and this may have been hashed before but here goes. I sit down at my computer, place my diet pepsi down beside my computer and light up the skull. I type in my name and when I appear I type who pk. What do I see? Necro, necro, duergar, fire giant, assassin etc...oh and say one storm giant and a human for good measure. Now the issue is: Do I accept likely certain death but have the balls to step out or do I make the decision to sign off and log in when I feel things are more balanced. Has this been a quandry for anyone else?

Stay on. Your ratio, gear and reputation don't matter. What matters is what you learn because your failings in the above will be taken care of only with experience. Unless you get joy out of having a good set for as long as possible but not being a quality fighter...

In general, you'll be a much more challenging opponent if you learn how to handle ganks and you never know, maybe you'll turn a few around. Personally I've had a couple times when people have tried to gank me only for me to kill half their group and survive. Its moments like those that make me feel great and truly enjoy the game, not logging on my lowbie for some easy power ranking.

To each his own though, I personally view that as cowardly and I'd be upset if I saw a character that pretends to be courageous do that.

Unless they are all walking around in big groups, it should simply come down to who jumps who.

As long as you don't get jumped, you should be ok. You can try to jump their stragglers.

If you can see them then they're not as much of a worry. It's the ones you can't see that are the problem. If you feel confident you can evade your enemies then stick around as long as you like. If not, run errands for ~10 minutes and feel free to quit. Nothing says you have to stick around when there's very little "constructive" for your character to do.

Short answer first:

You stay on. There are two ways to look at a range like that. You can look at it and say, "Look at all those people who can kill me," or you can look at it and say, "Look at all those people I can kill." Now if your, say a 15th lvl transmuter it might be a good time to explore and lay low in some obscure areas. DON'T BE A WUSS.

You will notice with out exception that if a character stays to face bad odds, and hunts against bad odds he gets positive commentary on deletion from immortal and mortal alike. Everyone appreciates and respects a character and player that toughs it out. I played Warborf, and he died a hell of a lot while facing hordes and hordes of bad guys. But the experience I got from that character in finding and avoiding enemies has been incredibly valuable in the years since. Now when I'm faced with an icky range I'm glad, and I end up killing more than dying.

The bottom line is that CF is a game. When you play a game you sometimes lose, and thats that. But the more your willing to lose by playing against tougher opponents (even if they are only numericly tougher) the better you will become. So get out there, call it all practice, and have some fun!

1) One way to ensure your character won't be PK'd is to never fight, or only fight when you have an overwhelming advantage. However, you don't get a million dollars or anything if that happens, so you might as well play the game and take some chances. It's a lot more fun being the underdog in most cases, and no one remembers the guy who won the easy battles.

2) It often doesn't take long for a range to 'swing' from one side being dominant to the other. If you're outnumbered, you can often do some stuff in less-traveled territories, look up in half an hour, and now your range is balanced or even favorable.

3) Keep in mind it's rarely as simple as the good-evil axis. If that fire giant is an Outlander, and that duergar is a Bloodoath, they're more likely to be after one another than you. Ditto Battle vs. magi, Tribunals vs. criminals, and miscellaneous personal vendettas. Plan as if all your enemies are working together, but keep in the back of your mind the fact that they may be fighting each other as much as looking for you.

I have read all the replies and I appreciate all the input. I have actually since then stayed in on some of the darker days of thera and I have to admit it adds a little rush to even the most mundane projects I would attempt. I did get my butt handed to me by a group but that would happen either way I guess. Thanks. I will keep a ray of light in the darkness so someone can see their way.
