Set it to 0% exp, instead of -20%. Times are changing, and the time invested vs fun ratio needs to change with it.

So what you are saying is keep the mechanic but tweak the impact. Hardly a game changer for those who die near the next level.
A more equitable approach (even though I don't buy into this whole argument you make) is to have the current drop cut in half. So those just about to rank drop to about 40 percent (half way between minus 20 and plus 100) and those who die at 0 percent drop to minus 10 etc.
I think at least some kind of penalty is needed though. Maybe removed altogether for people who have dropped 10 con already.

Sat Feb 1 20:02:40 2014 by 'Daevryn' at level 35 (49 hrs): Lots of intentional mob suicides at 35 so we can stay that level to work on assassinate, which is fine but... I don't think you ever get a con quest if you throw it away.
