#59661, "Age Death Warning"
|
As a player who has played multiple characters to age death I always feel blindsided by the final death. Would it be possible to get a warning randomly when you're within a few real life hours of age death? Maybe chest pains or something similar? It would be nice to have some warning to tie up loose ends IC.
Furthermore on the subject of hours have you ever considered a life extension quest like you do for con quests but instead of adding con it adds hours to a characters life? The mud I came from offered both and it was a nice option for players who stuck it out with their characters.

Serious question: what do you need the time for?,

If I think back my throw aways last 150-200 hours. I may be an exception, but there are more than a few players who like being able to have longevity. I actively hate lowbie CF, if I had to go through 50 hours of it to spend 100-200 hours at hero, I would never roll a character.

I already won't play arials because of the short life span. 500 hours isn't enough in most cases.

It only becomes stale if you aren't happy with your character to begin with. There's always more angles to pursue.
EDIT: Some characters don't get the better stuff till very late in life. If it takes 400 hours to get Emperor, I want another 400 to enjoy my reign a little.

Don't you get ghost time to tie up loose ends?
I personally like this because it takes gear out of circulation, and stops a character burning through con for ooc benefit when they know their time is up.
I think characters get long enough as it is. We're talking between 500 and 1000 hours!
In terms of dying on log in, I think that one possible reason might be that the -age items aren't being applied until part way through the log on process? So your age is temporarily higher if you have minus age items?

It's part of the charm that people aren't just mortal, but also suddenly mortal.
It'd be good to know the mechanic a little better, though, so we can use those -age items properly.
You can age-die on a tick after wearing a +age item, or on a tick after you're killed if you were wearing a -age item. Right? The latter I have experienced, the former I was told of.
Does that mean your age is checked for age death every tick?
But then why don't chars keel over randomly when they reach max age, but instead keel over at the start of their next login?

I don't know if that was always the case though. I've age died three characters, all sort of in different fashions.
Thendrell: Logged in, immediately age died on the tick. This was years ago though. That may be entirely coincidental that my next tick was my last when I logged off. All my gear went poof. Which is why I figured you age die on log in for gear purge purposes, but I learned later the gear purge happens right when you age die.
Allysia: Was wearing a -age circlet, took it off, age died on the tick.
Salyeris: Walking down eastern just dropped dead on a random tick. Had been logged in for a while. All my gear went poof.

Isn't coincidental, I've had login age death too, as Faeshu. But as Einrai I got PK'd and age-died on the tick, so not sure how it is now.
In fact that's why I'm asking at all.

While I was a shark, helping other people rank and was stuck in form, unable to revert. A nice IMM came and helped me so I could say my goodbyes.
